Star Wars: US Tools of Space Supremacy Review

Star Wars: US Tools of Space Supremacy
Average Reviews:

I bought this book thinking it was about space technology. After all, there's a rocket on the cover and the title makes it sound as though it's about hardware. But this is in fact a political diatribe against U.S. military space policy and our foreign policy in general. It blames the U.S. for not only all evil on Earth, but most of it above. Now, I am myself a strong critic of much of out country's recent actions and the Bush administration, but this book is COMPLETELY one-sided and does not describe any "tools" at all. I actually threw it away after reading it, it was just that uninteresting.

The expansion of space militarization forms a common thread with the explicit unilateral empire-building of the Bush administration. But just as Star Wars did not begin with the Missile Defense Agency, preventive war theory did not originate with Donald Rumsfeld.Advocates of military space always were on the front line of those demanding global dominance. Loring Wirbel argues that the seeds for the current space supremacy doctrine were sown at the end of the Cold War, in the early days of the Clinton administration. Examining the evolution of space-based tools, Wirbel shows that missile defense strategy is part of a dangerous US move to wage endless preventive war and demand global supremacy over allies and adversaries alike.Star Wars: US Tools of Space Supremacy provides a fresh look at the role of space as an enabler of the Bush administration's plans for endless preventive war.It debunks the benign notions of missile defence, and expands the definition of space supremacy beyond that of weapons in space, to include the unilateral misuse of space-based intelligence, communications, and targeting technologies.

Trilogy Scrapbook: The Rebel Alliance (Star Wars Trilogy Scrapbook) Review

Trilogy Scrapbook: The Rebel Alliance (Star Wars Trilogy Scrapbook)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is written and aimed at younger readers. The writing is rather simple, yet there are a lot of really awesome pictures from the films and a few tidbits of information that the basic fan may not even know (I learned the name of a new Rogue Squadron pilot). The book is divided into four sections each discussing a different area (the Rebel Alliance, the weapons of the Alliance, etc.). It doesn't take long to get through the book, but one may find they keep flipping back just to keep looking at the pictures. A nice little book that young readers will enjoy (especially those who think the only STAR WARS movie is THE PHANTOM MENACE) and that older readers may like to own if they are a fan.

The Fallen Western Star Wars: A Debate About Literary California Review

The Fallen Western Star Wars: A Debate About Literary California
Average Reviews:

It seems that Dana Gioia can't do much of anything without turning the poetry world upsided down. More controversy, and all collected in this slim volume for us to take in. It starts with Gioia's essay "Fallen Western Star" which chronicles San Francisco's fall from it's height as the second largest literary center in the US. Like most of Gioia's essays, it is well-written, well-though out, and pertinant. It applies to more than just San Francisco, but discusses the danger we are in of losing all regional literature. And from there it was a hornet's nest had been poked. There are some well written discussions from Jack Foley (who edited the collection) and Richard Silberg (who opposes Gioia). Silberg makes a good case and writes almost as eloquently as Gioia does. I leave it up to the reader to decide which side is right. There are also well written responses from Dave Mason, Jonah Raskin, Micheal Lind, and Scott Timberg. There is also a letter from Howard Junker, which really doesn't belong here because it is a rant against Gioia, which is not thought out at all and clumsily written. The book is one that is essential to understanding the state of American literature. As usual, Gioia is in the center of some flurry of anger or controversy, but as usual Gioia makes a point that all of us need to understand to help save the state of American Letters.

Cultural Writing. Literary Criticism. In THE "FALLEN WESTEN STAR" WARS, Jack Foley documents the heated debate that surrounds literary California. "When Dana Gioia, the author of "Can Poetry Matter?," published his provocative essay, "Fallen Western Star: The Decline of San Francisco as a Literary Region," he knew that certain quarters would be up in arms. Prominent California literati were quick to defend the San Francisco Scene and wrote articles attacking Gioia. Others attacked the attackers. The entire exhilarating, sometimes hilarious exchange appears in this book." "Jack Foley is doing great things in articulating the poetic consciousness of San Francisco"-Lawrence Ferlinghetti.

Rushing to Armageddon: The Shocking Truth about Canada, Missile Defence, and Star Wars Review

Rushing to Armageddon: The Shocking Truth about Canada, Missile Defence, and Star Wars
Average Reviews:

+++++
This powerful, easy-to-read book by the founder of the Council of Canadians and an Officer of the Order of Canada, Mel Hurtig, is "about how [the present governing minority] Liberal government [has] misled Canadians about one of the most vitally important decisions in the 137-year [as of 2004] history of our country, and how...the [Conservative Party wants] Canada to quickly and enthusiastically join the American Star Wars and other military plans."
Hurtig has written this book "because [he fears] that aggressive American militarism and the undeniable U.S. plans for the weaponization of space are rapidly leading the world towards nuclear carnage."
Let me state outright that this book is just not for Canadians. It is also meant for concerned Americans as well as any concerned, rational member of the world community.
In this book you will find, among other things, the names of various Canadian politicians but as well the names of various American politicians. Also there are names of people in the American military as well as the names of concerned scientists.
This book is extremely well documented. (There are footnotes on almost every page.) Hurtig's main narrative consists of mainly quotations from politicians, scientists, and military people but it also has extensive quotations from authors, journalists, and commentators.
There are 18 chapters. What I will do is state the title of each chapter first. A few chapter titles catch the essence of a chapter's contents but if a title does not, I elaborate with my own description or quote from the chapter.
(1) An Assault On Humanity. Describes the destruction and effects on humans that resulted from the dropping of the nuclear bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. ***This is clearly the most descriptive and heart-wrenching chapter.
(2) History's Worst Possible Nightmare. The nightmare: a nuclear war. Hurtig explains why.
(3) Making Us And The World Less Secure. ("Us" refers to Canada and the World.) "Deployment of the national missile defense system will likely tear up the fabric of arms control agreements which have improved global security for over thirty years."
(4) Secret, Confidential, And Canadian Eyes Only. Documents Hurtig obtained make it quite clear "that [Canada's] Department of Defense has made up its mind and strongly favors Canadian participation in the American Ballistic Missile Defense plans."
(5) Let's Not Have Too Many Meeting. "The present [Ballistic Missile Plan] has nothing to do with the weaponizing of space." Hurtig has uncovered evidence that this is false.
(6) Don't Even Think About Thinking About It. That is, Canada should not even think about not joining in on the U.S. missile program because there would be dire consequences. Is this really true?
(7) How Could We Possibly Go Along [with the U.S. missile defense program]? ("We" refers to Canada.) Hurtig answers this question.
(8) A Pandemic Of Insecurity: Escalation, Destabilization, Proliferation. "At the UN conference on the Non-Proliferation Treaty, there was broad condemnation of the [U.S.] Ballistic Missile Defense [plan] on the grounds that it would undermine decades of arms control agreements and provoke a new weapons race."
(9) Shield Of Dreams: Why The American National Missile Defense Won't Work.
(10) A Nuclear Arsenal In Space: Approving What We Have Always Opposed. "It is not credible for Canada to seek involvement and claim that such involvement does not imply support for the space-based [and nuclear weapon] elements that it knows Washington is actively pursuing." ***This is a most important chapter.
(11) The Busboy At The Conveyer Belt Inside The Tent. "Clearly this [the U.S. missile defense program] is an escalation of the arms race. This is a lunacy program. It cannot be justified from a defense point of view, or from an economic point of view."
(12) Rushing Into A Gigantic Boondoggle, And The REAL Threat. "The extraordinary emphasis on missile defense represents misplaced priorities. The top priority should instead be combating the threat of nuclear terrorism" (Union of Concerned Scientists).
(13) The Rogue Nation: No Longer Trusted...It Should Be Feared. This chapter examines how the U.S. is a rogue nation with respect to nuclear weapons.
(14) The Foolish And Arrogant Bush Doctrine. This chapter examines George W. Bush's ultimatum: "Either you're with us or you're against us...Over time its going to be important for nations to know they will be held accountable for inactivity [with regard to U.S. defense, military, and foreign policies]."
(15) National Mythological Defense: Profits and Greed Lining The Pockets Of Defense Contractors.
(16) The Wrong-Headed Priorities Of Government Are Stunning And Intolerable. ("Government" refers to that of the U.S.) "I want to know why there is always so much money for war and so little for the human condition."
(17) The Sword Of Damocles: Doesn't Canada Have To Choose Which Side We're On? (The story of Damocles is a Greek fable where, despite having everything, there is a sword over his head hung by a single horsehair that could fall at any moment.)
(18) Moving By Stealth To Co-operate In Our Own Ghastly Annihilation. ("Our" refers to Canada and the World.)
There are also three VERY informative appendices. The last one is entitled, "Rogue States, Terrorists, an Accident Waiting to Happen, and Why Destroying All Nuclear Weapons MUST BE the Only answer."
Finally, the only minor problem I had with this book is that its chapter titles in the table of contents and the chapters themselves are not numbered (as they are above). This book would have been more reader-friendly if these were numbered. (Interestingly, each appendix is numbered.)
In conclusion, this is a fascinating and honest book that presents the facts regarding nuclear weaponization of space and what this means for the world. If you want to know about this controversial issue, then this is a must-read!!
(first published 2004; acknowledgements; brief biographies of some cited authorities; translation of acronyms and abbreviations; preface; 18 chapters; main narrative 210 pages; 3 appendices)

The following decade has long been celebrated as a golden age in American film history. In this innovative study, Peter Krämer offers a systematic discussion of the biggest hits of the period (includingThe Graduate [1967],The Exorcist [1973] andJaws [1975]). Ohh I remember this Story i wish it was out for today's kids to enjoy the adventures of C-3PO and R2-D2 . i use to have a copy of this title, but i lost it somewhere what a shame. the original one that is pictured above came with a record to play so you could listen and turn the page. Quite a fun title. this is a really great story filled with adventure and the special effects on this record are awsome and the pictures are eyepoping.
This Story comes with the Voices of the actors that play R2-D2 and C-3PO. the story in nutshell is that the droids get caught up a droid vs droid war with C-3PO and R2-D2 getting caught up in the crossfire or the middle of the action.

I hope that this title comes out on a Book and Cd deal that would be fun.
Highly Recommended Title.

Stars in Their Courses : The Gettysburg Campaign, June-July 1863 Review

Stars in Their Courses : The Gettysburg Campaign, June-July 1863
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first Civil War book I ever read (not counting Stephen Crane's "Red Badge Of Courage" which I read back in the 10th grade), was Michael Shaara's "Killer Angels," an excellent book, moving and informative though somewhat discursive and lacking in as much battle detail as the reader may ultimately desire to know. That was by design as Shaara was seeking to show us the interior lives of the officers who fought at Gettysburg. In this sense "Killer Angels" is more like a novel than a history. "Stars In Their Courses" is a much more richly detailed - and not novelistic (though certainly not lacking in drama) - book, a book whose historical context is more fully exposed: each of the terrible interlocking events of those three days is exploded on the page so that we get a fuller appreciation of the totality of that battle, the "high-water mark of the Confederacy."
I encourage anyone who is interested in furthering their understanding of the Battle of Gettysburg, or of simply reading a great book about the turning point in America's most devastating war, to read this book. And make sure, while you're at it, to also read "Killer Angels." Side by side these book give a fascinating view of three bloody days in the fields and woods of Pennsylvania.
As an addendum, I would like to say that, while this book is more straightforward and less like a novel than KA, it is during the reading of Pickett's Charge from this book that both my wife and I broke down in tears.

When They Were Brothers (Star Wars: Clone Wars, Vol. 7) Review

When They Were Brothers (Star Wars: Clone Wars, Vol. 7)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What's cool about Obi-Wan Kenobi is that he's so cool. He's the "Negotiator." He's always in control and except for his bickering with Anakin never displays his frustration, annoyance, or anger. In fact the only time he loses it is when Yoda asks him in "Revenge of the Sith" to go after Darth Vader and again when he finally confronts his former Padawan, whom he doesn't have the courage to strike dead as he lies broiling in lava.
So it's a bit odd to see him in this story completely obsessed over Asajj Ventress, the lately deceased bald-headed villainess and student of dark Jedi arts from earlier Dark Horse Star Wars comics and the Clone Wars cartoons. For reasons never made clear, Obi-wan has a bee in his bonnet and her name is Ventress. He's convinced she's alive somewhere and waiting to pounce, so he goes and beats up a Black Sun don (the Black Sun being the mafia in the Star Wars universe), who says "right, you're obviously a better man than me, come have a drink and I'll tell you everything I know about the Confederacy."
Once you get past those two very improbable bits of the story, things get better, and that's do mostly to the fine work of artist Brian Ching, who illustrates some exciting action sequences that owe a great deal in framing and in detail to "The Revenge of the Sith." "Brothers" occurs just prior to the events of the film and was being written and drawn prior to its release. Ching obviously had access to the movie or the developmental artwork because this story features quite a bit of hardware from the film, from the ships to Grievous' Magna Guards. Much of the framing of the action sequences also appear similar in style to Lucas' work in RotS.
But after all the fighting's done, scripter Haden Blackman has to bring the story to conclusion, at which point the characters and events again become rather contrived. [SPOILERS] What we're presented is the Luke/Vader sequence at the end of "Return of the Jedi," with Obi-wan comforting a dying Ventress, searching for a glimmer of the "good" hidden below layers of evil. Any possible sympathy Blackman manages to evoke for the dying Ventress is thrown back in the reader's face two pages later when we find her contrition - and her death - were feigned and that thanks to Sith meditation techniques she is alive and now on the run from the Jedi _and_ the Confederacy, setting up what I'm guessing might be a possible return in the animated Clone Wars series now in production. [END SPOILERS]
Overall, "When They Were Brothers" is not a complete letdown, but it certainly doesn't live up to its hype as a "must read" story leading into "Revenge of the Sith."
The book finishes out with a 22-page story originally published for Free Comic Book Day, an annual marketing campaign by comic book publishers and retailers in the US. Nothing of any significance happens here, just Obi-Wan and Anakin crash landing on a Confederacy controlled planet, riding around on speeder bikes, and hacking and slashing their way through a battalion of droids. Good for what it's worth, but entirely forgettable.

Many on both sides of the Clone Wars have been wounded or killed. But the war has taken its toll on the survivors, too.Consumed by the belief that the Dark Jedi Asajj Ventress still lives, Obi-Wan Kenobi has temporarily forsaken his duties and recruited Anakin Skywalker in his desperate hunt for Ventress. But Anakin believes that Obi-Wan is chasing a ghost - because he himself killed Ventress. And Anakin's doubts about his former Master's quest are not assuaged when, following the trail of the rumors of Ventress' existence, they walk into a trap set by their old enemies, the bounty hunter Durge and Count Dooku!A tale that tests the strengths of the bonds of brotherhood!

Lucky Stars and Gold Bars: A World War II Odyssey
Average Reviews:

Unlucky Stars And Gold Bars: A World War II Odyssey is a 522-page distillation of some 400 letters written by Lyle Sladek, a South Dakota farm boy during his military service as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. Lyle served as a Cryptographic Security and Intelligence Officer in the China-Burma-India; European; and Mediterranean theaters of war. He wrote about his observations respecting profound socioeconomic changes in Asia and Europe posting his letters home from five continents. Compiled and edited by his daughter, Lucky Stars And Gold Bars is especially valuable in what it reveals about the noncombat side of military life "in the field" during World War II as experienced by four out of five GIs during the second world war. Enhanced with 236 illustrations and thoroughly "reader friendly", Lucky Stars And Gold Bars is a rather unique and enthusiastically recommended addition for personal, academic, and community library Military History & Biography collections.

As a fifty year old father of an eight year old son, fascinated with Star Wars and a novice to computer games, I was delighted to find this guide. It not only steps one through strategies for game play but points out lots of terrific shortcuts and player tips. With well annotated maps of each course and clever backgrounds on the drivers and their engines, this books adds to the excitement of the pad race scenes from the Star Wars Episode One film. Only a few pages are specific to Nintendo, while most apply also to PC game players. Much more specific than the game's user manual with wonderful pictures and great advice. This was our first non-educational games (we had to purchases game controller, 3D accelerator and more memory) and our first game guide. Star Wars Revenge of the Sith (Interactive Play-A-Sound)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my kids' favorite book (ages 3 & 5)! They love to push the buttons which are actual recordings from the movie! For example, Anakin says, "I'm not the Jedi I should be," and Obi-Wan says "You still have much to learn." Other buttons include Yoda, Mace Windu, Palpatine, Padme, etc. There is also a trivia game at the bottom and you are asked certain Star Wars trivia questions and to check your answer, you push the Darth Vader button and if he breathes the Darth Vader way, your answer was wrong, but if you hear Yoda's voice saying "May the force be with you," that means you got the right answer.
The story is nicely paraphrased as well, making it easier for your children to understand the story. Really cute book. Highly recommended.
