Star Wars The Force Unleashed 2 Collector's Edition: Prima Official Game Guide Review

Star Wars The Force Unleashed 2 Collector's Edition: Prima Official Game Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Firstly, I need to say that I've not read the book from cover to cover. Heck, I've probably only read about two pages worth of information at this time. I wasn't looking for spoilers, and I plan to use the book on my second run through of the game.
What I would like to comment on is the quality of the book. Some little things that you may not notice when looking at a computer screen of the item. The Collector's Edition of the book is a hardcover beauty. The image of Starkiller on the front cover is actually embossed, a nice little surprise. Open the cover, and on the bottom of the inside front cover is a limited edition number. It's a six-digit number, so I'm assuming that at least 100,000 of this will/have been printed. My copy, which arrived on release day was something like 25,000 or so in its number. Again, something else I wasn't expecting, but made a nice addition.
As far as the actual content of the book? It looks to be laid out in the same manner as the Prima guide for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. The primary difference in this is that the Wii material is not broken out into its own book, it's in the main bulk of the book through the walk-throughs, with the exception of breaking out the Wii only combat section. The art in the back is pretty snazzy. Some of the concept art is traditional art, while there are some beautiful renders from the game.
Hope this helps to decide if you really want the collector's edition, or if the paperback version is all you need.

If you are a younger reader who had trouble reading the adult version of Shadows of the Empire(I know I used to!), or a kid who wants to read a great story about Star Wars, this is the book for you. It captures all the fun and excitement of the adult book, but it is easier to read and is shorter. 9Not to mention is says how to pronounce Xizor! In my opinion, this is a great buy!

Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds: Prima's Official Strategy Guide Review

Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds: Prima's Official Strategy Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this guide because I love the game Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds (I'll assume anyone who reads this will already have played the game so I won't describe it). I recieved an excerpt with my copy of the game which had the chapter on tips on playing the game (times for moving through tech levels, etc.). I was excited, but slightly disappointed to find that a large portion of the guide details how to get through all the scenarios rather then the normal game, which I was more interested in.
There is the (pretty good) story for the first chapter (although it goes in the some-stormtroopers-are-clones theory, where I go more for the (noncanon?) view detailed by Timothy Zahn's trilogy), and then the book goes into a overview of the main menu (what each button does). The next chapter was the excerpt included in my game (which is a good chapter). After that, detailed stats on every unit/building in the game, and then a neat transcript of a conversation about the different civilizations, along with a tiny chapter on strategies.. Pages 63-175 (out of 204) detail every single scenario. After that is another chat about multiplayer strategies, and then two appendices.
All in all, it is a very handy resource, it just won't replace you playing and finding out how to win yourself.

Star Wars Empire at War (Prima Official Game Guide) Review

Star Wars Empire at War (Prima Official Game Guide)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book because the documentation that comes with Empire at War is so scanty, and unfortunately I must say I'm rather disappointed. The most important bit of info you'll need is a chart telling you the income, trade, value per mine and number of build slots per planet - something that took me about 1 - 1 1/2 hours to research on my own and manually enter in the planet entries. It would have been even simpler to count hardpoints, prices, etc. for the ships and list that up on the various ship entries, or even better, on a 1 or 2 page chart - again, something that would have been very simple and basic for a researcher to have done.
There are some nice tips for the multiplayer game, but I wouldn't depend on them unless you fancy being eaten alive by the other players. Most of the tactical and strategic advice is basic, common sense stuff - get your income up, balance your unit and technology builds, etc - but again, the excellent charts and data tables that one expects in a Prima Guide and that one would use to make such decisions are entirely absent.
Spending an hour or two collating important data like this into the book before publishing it would seem basic to me, but clearly not to whoever put this book out. The fact that it's about a third more expensive than other Prima Guides (probably because the game it covers is a hot Lucas Arts title) doesn't help matters.
All in all, unless you're a collector or have money to burn, I wouldn't bother with it. If you really feel the need to get it, at least check any major bookstore or game shop and read the insides BEFORE you buy it. Because failing to do so is how this particular gamer got took.

The Art and Making of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Review

The Art and Making of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Art and Making of Star Wars Force Unleashed brings you behind the scenes into the game development process, while staying close to artists' drawing boards.
This book is choked full with breathtaking concept art, character designs, diary entries and screenshots from the game. It features over 300 pieces of art work in 168 pages. On two pages are pasted paper pockets, with each containing 5 character cards.
If you've owned the "art of" series for the Star Wars movies, expect the same high quality environment paintings. But this one goes up one notch with beautiful page layouts. It's the art magazine type of layout, so the every page design is essentially art in itself. Great effort from the book designers.
The 6 chapters in the book explains the game creation process in depth. That's from the development of a concept, to the pitch and approval stage, next to character studies, then environment and finally the technology behind.
There are lots of nitty gritty details that you won't read on Internet interviews. The authors bring you to the cutting floor and let you read all about the discarded ideas.
After reading the book, you'll literally feel like you've worked with these people (most probably as an intern).
For Star Wars fans, you have no reasons not to get this book. For people interested in concept design and animation, this book has lots of insight for you. This book is a great source of inspiration.
Be careful of the binding though. The part where the cover meets page 1 seems like they will come apart in the future. Easily fixed by pasting some clear tape to fix the problem before it develops.

The Star Wars saga continues! The Force Unleashed: Art of the Game chronicles the four-year development of the anxiously awaited, action-packed video game (releasing April 2008) developed by LucasArts from conception to completion. The book reveals innovative game design concept and images, three-dimensional renders, and behind-the-scenes photos. The Force Unleashed game casts players as Darth Vader's "Secret Apprentice" and promises to unveil new revelations about the Star Wars galaxy. The expansive story, created under direction from George Lucas, is set during the unexplored era between Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. The game re-imagines the scope and scale of the Force by taking full advantage of new technologies that will be seen and experienced for the first time, such as Digital Molecular Matter (DMM) by Pixelux Entertainment and euphoria by NaturalMotion Ltd., paired with the powerful Havok Physics (TM) system. These new technologies create gameplay only possible on the new generation of consiles. DMM incorporates the physical properties of objects in the environment so that every element reacts exactly as it should--wood breaks like wood, glass shatters like glass, Felucian plants bend in their unique way, and more. Meanwhile, as a revolutionary behavioral-simulation engine, euphoria enables interactive characters to move, act, and even think like actual human beings, adapting their behavior and resulting in a different response every single time. Well before its release, The Force Unleashed game is already buzzing on blogs and gamer websites, at gamer conferences, and among Star Wars fans. LucasArts is fully backing the promotion of the game to the tens of millions ofStar Wars fans around the world.

Star Wars Battlefront: Prima Official Game Guide Review

Star Wars Battlefront: Prima Official Game Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One of the great mysteries about the game Star Wars Battlefront is why the manual is so incomplete. It provides only a limited subset of the keyboard / mouse commands (PC version), and it further fails to describe in adequate detail the key abilities of the different character types (e.g., pilot, scout, infantry, etc.).
I purchased the "Official Game Guide" in hopes that it might fill in some of this information, and, surprisingly, it didn't. For example, it includes statements to the effect "Use your pilot to heal other characters," but nowhere in the guide, or the manual that came with the game, does it illustrate HOW to do that. (For what it's worth: by pressing "g," you have to choose heal / repair as a pilot's secondary weapon. Then, right-click the mouse to deploy a healing kit.)
The manual does however provide useful maps and a decent description of the strategies either side of a battle might use to their advantage.
In sum, the manual that comes with the game is incomplete, at best, and this "official guide" does not fill in all of the gaps. It is surprising to me that there isn't a good summary of the keyboard / mouse commands, nor gamepad commands for other platforms.

Star Trek Online: The Needs of the Many Review

Star Trek Online: The Needs of the Many
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a little disapointed with this one. I normally consume Trek books of any era, by any author with great delight. You don't even want to know how many copies of "How Much For Just The Planet" I have.
I don't regret buying this one, but I regret not buying it at a used book store for less.
One issue is perhaps unavoidable given the overall format. With the whole "Living History" idea, I expect some certain similarities in tone and format to World War Z. But on this one, there are a couple times when I can almost hear the rustle of pages from That Other Book in the background. Again, that could be simply because it's a "living history" about a massive war.
The other, greater issue is the author's clear and obvious choice to politicize the book. Between dedicating the book to a currently active politician, and making assorted thinly veiled references to policies of a Recent President Who Shall Not Be Named as well as current events, it gets pretty ham-handed.
Social commentary has always been an enriching element in Star Trek, but this work is somewhat tainted by it's level of current-day political commentary, enhanced by the "narrator's" penchant for wistfully sermonizing, sermons which become downright sticky and gooey sweet.
"Jake" ends up reducing the notional interviews from interviews to a socio-political soapbox for the author to use him to mumble from, a vehicle for his own commentary as opposed to focussing on the experiences and stories of his interview subjects. It's rarely a good thing when the focus of a documentary becomes the interviewer, and not the subjects or their stories. If I want to read an author's politicizing, I'll go to their homepage or blog. The digs at a recent administration and political faction become a wink at the camera that damages the immersion, and wastes type that could have been used telling a better story. (This being despite my personal dislike of said administration.)
Still, there are some good vignettes, some good bits of dialogue, but it's somewhat inferior to what I've come to expect in current Star Trek reading material.

Prior to the terror-filled times of the Long War—the seemingly endless struggle against the Undine, a paranoid, shape-shifting race once known only as Species 8472—enemy sleeper agents quietly penetrated every echelon of Federation society, as well as other starfaring civilizations throughout the Alpha and Beta quadrants. The ensuing conflict shook humanity to its very core, often placing its highest ideals against a pure survival instinct. All too frequently, the Undine War demanded the harshest of sacrifices and exacted the steepest of personal costs from the countless millions whose lives the great interdimensional clash forever altered.Drawn from his exhaustive research and interviews, The Needs of the Many delivers a glimpse of Betar Prize–winning author Jake Sisko's comprehensive "living history" of this tumultuous era. With collaborator Michael A. Martin, Sisko illuminates an often-poorly-understood time, an age marked indelibly by both fear and courage—not to mention the willingness of multitudes of unsung heroes who became the living embodiment of the ancient Vulcan philosopher Surak's famous axiom, "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few."

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Volume 2 Review

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Volume 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As this is told through the eyes of Boba Fett - being my favourite character - and the hype from the Lucasasts guys saying this story is their Empire Strikes Back, I was hoping for something pretty special. Further to this, I found the first GN for the original Force Unleashed, a solid translation of the game. Sadly, however, this is a second rate, boring, lifeless, bordering on silly, story.
One good note; the artwork is superb. Other than that it is essentially a five scene story. Everything feels long winded, trying to fill the pages rather than projecting the story forward.
I was worried the game would be this lame, but apparently this is designed to compliment the game story (and hopefully this will be better once you've played the game - but I don't see how).
Personally, I loved this first game, it's story and all the associated books/merchandise. This one, so far, is feeling like they're cashing in on the first ones success...

The Force Unleashed (Star Wars) Review

The Force Unleashed (Star Wars)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Force Unleashed is about a young man with Force powers so immense he can whip Vader and the Emperor simultaneously. Based on a video game in which you get to play this Force-wielding giant, the conceptual emphasis is on action and playability, rather than character or drama. Consequently the graphic novel reads like a series of set pieces, big fight scenes with a bit of exposition to tie them together. Ostensibly the plot concerns the inception of the Rebellion, but as with the beginnings of most things in the Star Wars universe, the origin of the Alliance is more than it seems.
Thematically, TFU cleaves closely to the SW universe formula - young man spends his life doing bad and redeems himself in the end with a tiny act of good. The orphaned Starkiller is raised as Darth Vader's secret apprentice, an amoral assassin who dispatches with equal skill characters on both sides of the war. Somewhere along the way he switches to being a good guy with a conscience and a love interest, though it's not really clear how either develops. Neither is why the leaders of the Rebellion trust anyone who shows up at their door expressing an interest in sacking the Empire.
The artwork is a mixed bag, with Brain Ching opening and closing the story with some finely illustrated chapters. Unfortunately, as with his stint on Knights of the Old Republic, he seems unable to work fast enough to complete an entire project - or takes assignments with impossible deadlines - and so we get a couple of less skilled artists working on the middle sections.
There is a novel of the same name covering the exact same story. I haven't yet read it, but given author Sean Williams' track record (as coauthor of one of the worst chapters of the New Jedi Order), and given that the graphic novel isn't anything worth bragging about, I'd wager the novel is as limp, or with more extraneous material, even limper. My suggestion would be to unleash your own force on the game. That is, if you have a console. PC users will have to settle for the graphic novel.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed: Prima Official Game Guide (Prima Official Game Guides) Review

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed: Prima Official Game Guide (Prima Official Game Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
- Has good info on what/where each holocron is.
- Provides good character profiles.
- Provides short story line to better tie in The Force Unleashed with Star Wars III and IV.
Cons:
- The guide is very hard to follow when trying to proceed through a level. You get easily lost when using this guide. As you proceed down a path, you're not sure what part of the level the guide is referring to. It's very ambiguous.
- There are no detailed maps as you follow the guide, just one simple no detail map at the beginning of each section. You have to keep flipping back to the map and try to figure out where on the map you are. This gets very frustrating as you try to proceed.
- No best route and alternant route information.
- The screenshots in each section are hard to see and don't help. It's very hard to connect the screenshots to your screen. They are a complete waste of space and add no value. Detailed map inserts would have been a better use of this space.
- Although I listed Holocron locations above as a pro, the guide is frustrating to use as it guides you to them. The info and direction the guide provides is vague.
- Has errors for what buttons to hit for some force combos for the PS3. For instance, it may list X, X, X, X for a particular combo, the actual button may be square.
All and all, this is an ok guide, it helped me get some holocrons (although it was frustrating to use), but you really don't need it. The guide gives you generic advice and info on beating bosses that you could figure out yourself.
