The Star Wars Action Figure Archive Review

Going all the away up to the end of 1998 and therefore missing all of the Episode One figures and new specialities such as the sail-barge skiff and Stormtrooper with blaster-rifle rack, this is nevertheless the ultimate figure guide. Forget the rest. Continuous fans (who kept the original figures from childhood) to lapsed fans (who had them all, but sold/gave them away) to new fans, this is for you, one and all. Figure histories, oddities, facts and figures, production runs, special campaigns, cards variations: I was extremely impressed with the book and its contents. Each figure gets full-colour treatment accompanied by stills from the various films (reproduced as "evidence") every detail is there: from equipment to weapons. I particularly liked the "rogues gallery" at the beginning where every figure in the original and the later ranges are reproduced in miniature to compare and contrast. This book will have been drooling over figures you desire or mourning over lost, once owned treasures. Get your wallet out now and check you credit limits. Once you get this book you will be hitting every Star Wars store you can find to buy (or re-buy) those essential figures. Would make a great present.

Son of the Morning Star: Custer and The Little Bighorn Review

Son of the Morning Star: Custer and The Little Bighorn
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Evan Connell has written a powerful book. It is a balanced presentation of George Armstrong Custer, the post-Civil War Indian Wars, Plains Indians and the myth of the Battle of the Little Big Horn.
Facts abound. I started this book thinking it would primarily focus on Gen. Custer and the fight. While those topics are the framework of the book, Connell spends quite a bit of time exploring various indian chiefs, indian practices, previous conflicts and the conditions that produced one of our country's most celebrated battles. First person quotes are abundent and the author usually produces two or more sides to every episode. These explorations underscore how difficult getting at a true history is, particulary when pride and ego rest on a particular telling of an event. He has done very good research.
This is a brutal book. American and indian savagry are laid bare. Warfare and existence on the frontier were not pretty. The "rules" of war were abandoned by both sides with regard to the taking of prisoners or the frequent butchering of women and children along with those unlucky enough to be in the path of maurading soldiers or indian bands. Connell's book leaves no doubt that American notions of racial superiority, mainfest destiny and economics created the situation in which the indians would fight in the extreme to protect their lands from white encroachment. However, the author also underscores that most of the indian tribes were brutal and ruthless when attacking other tribes, lone indians and in their own rituals and customs. Had America respected it's indian treaties, it can be argued that the indian lands still would have had atrocities visited upon them as various tribes concentrated their full time attentions on settling the wrongs each felt had been metted out by other red men. His refusal to treat the indian as a politically correct manifestation of mother nature is refreshing and allows for a very balanced telling of the story.
The author has a unique writing style. He doesn't come to a fork in the road without taking it. These side tracks and tangents allow him to explore in full the charactors and milieu attendent to The Last Stand. However, they are presented in no particular order or chronology. The author paints a strong impression rather than presenting an ordered and structured telling of a compelling tale. This incohesion is so pronounced that the end of a chapter has no meaning other than to allow one to catch one's breath before plunging into the next twenty pages of free associations.
My opinion of this book changed several times during my reading. In the beginning, I found it hard to get into because of it's meandering style. But the vignettes, characters, facts and writing are all compelling. His style will require some adjustment to the frequent reader of history. But, by the end the reader will know that they have immersed themselvs in a darn good story that fascinates.

Star Wars -- A Musical Journey: Music from Episodes I - VI (Big Note Piano) Review

Star Wars -- A Musical Journey: Music from Episodes I - VI (Big Note Piano)
Average Reviews:

This review may hold true for all the "Big Note Piano" songbooks put out by Alfred Publishing as we've loved them all. It's perfect for my Late Beginner students and my 10-yr. old son who transports himself to another world when playing these arrangements. It's challenging enough as it offers lots of practice with different hand positions, keys, accidentals, eighth notes, meter, chords and intervals (just about every aspect of music). But simple enough that the pianist doesn't get frustrated. At the same time, it's mostly familiar music of favorite movies and songs, which offers motivation for the pianist. Even as an accomplished pianist and teacher, I LOVE playing from them!
Alfred Publishing needs to put out MORE "Big Note Piano" songbooks for kids!!! We currently also own "Harry Potter: Magical Music from the First Five Years and "The Polar Express". Would love to see "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Tangled" (along with more recent Disney hits), as well as more recent cartoon theme songs.

Wandering Star (Lannan Translation Selection Series) Review

Wandering Star (Lannan Translation Selection Series)

The "wandering stars" are two young girls, each trying to escape from an oppressive, threatening condition. Esther is a Jewish girl who escapes from Nazi-occupied Europe to Israel. Nejma lives in a Palestinian refugee camp. The two girls' lives are not intertwined physically, but rather spiritually in how they both deal with similar feelings of fear, helplessness, and desire for a better life. Le Clezio, a French author of 20 novels, goes beyond politics, cultural differences, and historical moments to cast light on the universal feelings in experiences of suffering and the struggles, desires, and dreams growing out of such experiences.

This graphic novel is a great history filler for the time that lapsed between A New Hope and Empire. When read sequentially after the first two volumes, it becomes a whole new movie explaining how and why the rebels chose to go to Hoth and helps to give a better understanding of the main characters motives. All in all, a great read for any Star Wars afficinando!

RED STAR AIRACOBRA: Memoirs of a Soviet Fighter Ace 1941-45 (Soviet Memories of War) (v. 2)
Average Reviews:

The book is more or less a typical memoir from the Eastern Front. I read it in one day and enjoyed it for the most part. Unlike another memoir which I read by a pilot, the losses that Mariinskiy's regiment suffered were not at all as bad as they could have been. He definitely served in one of the better formations and had one of the highest scoring aces, Gulayev, flying in the same regiment. Now, the real reason I give this book 4 stars is because of the horrible editing job. Mistakes are quite numerous! On one page you will read about the 29th Guards Fighter Regiment, on another the same regiment is now the 129th. Gulayev is spelled at times as Gulaev. Sandomir is spelled as Samdomir. And so on and so forth, it becomes quite annoying and definitely takes away from the pleasure of reading this book! The translation is also rudimentary at times, it could have been a much better read if time was taken to correct these two problems. Otherwise some of the stories are very interesting although from time to time I found it hard to believe the numbers the author quotes, both those planes he and his squadron encountered and those planes that were shot down, although you never know. Suffice it to say, if you can get by with the lousy editing and crude translation, you might just enjoy this book.

The Early Adventures (Classic Star Wars, Volume Four) Review

The Early Adventures (Classic Star Wars, Volume Four)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One of my fondest memories of Star Wars--fonder even than watching the first movie--is coming upon Russ Manning's "Star Wars" during its run in newspapers. While I can't really quibble with the other reviewers opinions, I think he's being a bit harsh; the style in this volume is classic newspaper story telling, although somewhat redited for the Dark Horse volumes as were all the reprints of the newspaper strips.
Yes, I can't argue that the Al Williamson/Archie Goodwin run on the strip was more in line with the overall thrust of the LFL expansion of their Star Wars property. However, there is a charm and an excitement in the Manning strips that is not present in the slicker, longer storylines that followed.
The tale of Leia and Luke struggling to convince a planet that specialized in the manufacture of starfighter weapons components and the ultimate space battle against Darth Vader and a Star Destroyer, not to mention the mysterious Blackhole who had been charged by Vader to hunt down the Rebels, were among the elements that made up my first long-form writing efforts, fan fiction. I can trace a line directly back to those efforts and that strip and my current career as a writer. Boba Fett's appearance in the final section of the book--created by Alfredo Alcala and another artist after Manning left the strip for health reasons--also sparked my imagination and inspired a love for the character that exists to this day. Boba Fett's appearance here remains my favorite in the Expanded Universe.
I recommend others take a look at these classics. Who knows? Maybe you'll be inspired as I was.

Even with less than twenty minutes of "screen time" to his credit, the most popular character from the Star Wars trilogy is Boba Fett. Dark Horse offers a number of comics featuring the merciless bounty hunter, but it all starts here, in this trade paperback collecting Russ Manning's Star Wars newspaper strips. It was in these strips, which originally ran in 1979 and 1980, that Boba Fett made his very first appearance in print, making this a true must-have item for anyone looking to become a Jedi Master! The artwork has been colored, reformatted, and expertly retouched by Rick Hoberg, who worked with Manning on the original strips. Relive the adventures that thrilled readers seventeen years ago! Experience the very first comics appearance of the infamous Boba Fett (dated prior to his motion-picture debut)! And delight in Star Wars legend Al Williamson's new color cover, dedicated to Manning!

I got these to use in concert with the Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Campaign Guide. They are excellent. In only 3 booster packs, we have already gotten more than enough minis to run a game, including quite a few choice ones to represent all the Jedi you would need in a campaign, and some great villains, including Darth Malak and Darth Traya! They are all quite nicely made, and the lightsabers are even a nice translucent harder plastic than the rest of the minis materials. All of the minis are also quite reasonably priced, and you get quite a few of them in each pack. Excellent value. I am going to keep getting the booster packs until we have all of them for the KOTOR set.
See the photos I have uploaded (above) showing what quite a few of the minis look like.

A Southern Star For Maryland: Maryland and the Secession Crisis Review

A Southern Star For Maryland: Maryland and the Secession Crisis
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although at times it sounds like a masters-level thesis, Denton's A Southern Star for Maryland is a decent overview of how Maryland reacted to Secession Fever and how the state was compelled to stay in the Union. Denton provides some interesting numbers and analysis to support his thesis that Marylanders were inclined to join the Confederacy, detailing the general pro-Southern nature of the state. He also does a good job of detailing the quick and effective (and often legally questionable) movement by federal officials and Union volunteers to squash pro-secession sentiments in the state.

The Bialien Trilogy: Rise of the Bialiensapien: Human Evolved Review

The Bialien Trilogy: Rise of the Bialiensapien: Human Evolved
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"'The Bialien Trilogy - Rise of the Bialiensapien: Human Evolved' by Vlane Carter is not your typical sci-fi novel. Think of a comic book that uses words instead of illustrations and you might come close. One thing that the writer certainly has is imagination. It is written very visually. Bialien follows the journey of a nineteen-year old named Jaden, who travels to a far galaxy and back to Earth. Along his travels he meets up with creative characters and clever technology. If you are a reader that enjoys details, Vlane writes convincing science to back up his creativity.
Bialien begins quickly and doesn't let up. Jaden's journey ends up back on Earth with him having super human powers and the help from an entertaining sidekick. Due to time distillation, he finds himself young while the planet has changed rapidly. Technology has changed, but ignorance still rears its ugly head. Jaden, knowing of the impending danger approaching, must battle to save the planet with a corrupt government in power and also save the girl. The rapid pace keeps the reader moving forward, but I found that some of the action scenes were a drawn out.
You may tell by his style that Vlane is very passionate about his writing. It takes time and effort to envision and write a novel of this length without losing the energy throughout it. Bialien is his first novel, and, from his marketing material and website, certainly not his last. It is always interesting to see the first story written and how writing styles evolve from book to book. Let's see where Volume Two takes us." - TBR TopBookReviewers

The Star Captains: Frigate Command in the Napoleonic Wars Review

The Star Captains: Frigate Command in the Napoleonic Wars
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The Star Captains: Frigate Command in the Napoleonic Wars"
is an unparalleled look at Royal Navy frigate captains, the officers who were the historical seeds for Patrick O'Brian's Jack Aubrey and C.S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower. Wareham's interest in the subject began with his curiosity about Captain James Newman Newman, whose portrait hung in a stairway at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Seeking to learn more about this thoroughly obscure officer led Wareham beyond standard library books on naval history, and he soon realized that there was little published information about typical frigate captains. Wareham's research into the subject led to his Phd thesis and this book.
What was the career of a post captain like? What did a career in the navy of this era consist of? What was the truth behind the popular images of Nelson's navy? These are the questions that Wareham sought to answer. Along the way, he provides a good deal of analytical data about frigate captains, including statistics on the length of service between passing for lieutenant and being made post, on the how many years a captain might serve as commander of a frigate, and on frequency of assignments to various duty stations. Prize agents' accounts for frigates' captures are tabularized. Family social backgrounds and professions of siblings are listed. All in all, Wareham's book is a treasure trove of information. He also describes various frigate battles and their aftermaths, and he discusses the careers of many unheralded Royal Navy captains. All in all, this is a first-rate resource for better understand the realities of the world so familiar from the works of O'Brian and Forester.

Mil Mi-8 and Mi-17 Rotary Wing Workhorse and War Horse - Red Star Vol. 14 Review

Mil Mi-8 and Mi-17 Rotary Wing Workhorse and War Horse - Red Star Vol. 14
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Like most the other titles in the "Red Star" series, this book is a winner. Gordon lays out the development history of the HIP in substantial detail (especially interesting are factoids about the civil transport/industrial role for helicopters) and in the macro sense provides plenty of historic and contemporary photographs to satisfy the modeler and the aviation buff. My only complaint is that photos are not provided of every variant (although the major variants are well represented). It might be a daunting task to do so given the sheer number of variants involved, but I find that a picture really is worth a thousand words and a photo would greatly compliment the many short variation descriptions. Still, this book is a keeper!

The Soviet Union's ubiquitous and versatile helicopter, first flown in 1961 and still in production, and which has served worldwide and participated in many conflicts and in many roles, is fully documented here from first-hand Russian sources, with much fresh information and photos. Over the years, the Mi-8 and its variants have become veritable aerial workhorses, participating in countless conflicts. Its best-known role was probably in the Soviet war in Afghanistan, where the type provided sterling service in transport, close air support, search and rescue and medical evacuation. Other wars in which the Mi-8 had been involved include the Indo-Pakistani conflict, the Arab-Israeli wars, the civil wars in Angola and Sri Lanka and the Chechen wars, to name but a few. On the other hand, the type has been actively used for peacekeeping and humanitarian missions by the UN. The Mi-8 has seen service in virtually every country of the world and is still in production. The fact that new versions keep appearing testifies that the Mi-8s full potential has not yet been used up!

Final Winter (Five Star Mystery Series) Review

This pacy novel reflects a scenario not a million miles away from the movie 'Speed.' In this case, we have a fleet of airborne airliners that will unleash havoc on the world if they descend below 3000 feet. The action is fast and well-written and it's just the kind of escapism that will make an ideal vacation read. But there's one vast flaw with the plot. You'll find some real nailbiting stuff as they try to solve the problem of getting the jets safely down to earth. Seems nobody thought to simply land them at airports over 3000 feet high, however! Oh well, that shouldn't stop you from enjoying a zippy read.
