Guadalcanal, Tarawa and Beyond: A Mud Marine's Memoir of the Pacific Island War Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)There have been a lot of books published on the Pacific War recently and quite possibly it's related to the recent HOB miniseries the Pacific. This is great for historians. Fist person accounts of this region have been harder to find than books written by those who served in Europe.
This particular book is one of the best of the recently published books. It was very well written and edited. It contained a number of photographs of and maps that have not been previously included in similar works. In particular the famous wall on Tarawa is presented.
I liked this book for these reasons and many more. The author does a fine job of detailing his experience on Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan and even Tinian. The last battle being one of the final major conflicts of the region and strategically very important as you may remember the bombs were flown from Tinian. Ironically, it seems Tinian's place in history is almost forgotten.
This book would be a great read for some interested in what was happening in the Pacific during the war. You don't have to be an expert on military history. It would make a excellent book report for someone in high school or could be used as a stand-alone book in a college level class. This book was a real pleasure to read.
If you enjoyed this book then I would recommend reading Dean Ladd's book Faithful Warriors as a companion. For more detailed reading I would strongly suggest reading the classic With the Old Breed by E.B. Sledge and Helmet for my Pillow by Robert Leckie as both are definitive first person accounts of the conflict.
