Star Wars Dark Empire #1: The Destiny of a Jedi (Dark Horse Comics)

I remember reading this when it first came out. I thought the artwork was beautiful and it had a really dark, gritty feel. Even looking back, I have to say Dark Empire really produces an emotional response like no other work in the Expanded Universe timeline. Some moments were really wonderful, such as Leia's use of the holocron and the approach of the Dark Side guards on Byss. They really brought back some of the sense of "ancient mysteries" in the Star Wars universe.
Unfortunately, overall the series is just too riddled with plot holes and half-baked dialogue. It seems like overnight everything that had been achieved after the Battle of Endor was all for naught. Meanwhile, I don't mind the fact that Luke goes over to the Dark Side for example, but it's never really clear why or how he takes that momentous step. It's like at one moment he's spying, the next he's switching sides. By contrast, despite all the criticism the prequels get, I think they did a good job of showing why Anakin turned to the dark side and that it was a consequence of specific choices. In Dark Empire, it's almost like Luke just slips out of character.
I think a lot of fans imagine that Dark Empire series never happened. It certainly diverted the Expanded Universe from Timothy Zahn's more sophisticated plots. However, I do think DarK Empire has some value, especially as one of the truly dark entries into the Star Wars universe. I suspect you'll enjoy it if you want to - and are willing - to see your favorite heroes in a new light. You might get frustrated though if you care about the plot and continuity.

This book means a great deal to me since my father was a also an officer of the U.S. Army artillery unit profiled in this memoir and a close friend of the author. The author has written a personal narrative of WWII during 1941-45 that adds a human dimension from a young artillery officer's point of view, something that allows me to understand the hardship of that great war on my parent's generation.

This book is a good story of Leias pass and ties to her father. The book is a good blend of the old to furture. Not much Jedi action but the chase leaves you turning each page! Good read all around.

Marriage has not changed Han and Leia much - they still bicker and banter with each other, but now they have something new to disagree on: whether to have children. Han wouldn't mind being a father, but Leia is terrified that whatever turned her own father into Darth Vader might be genetic, and she can't risk giving birth to a monster. In an attempt to put the past to rest, the newlywed couple go to Tatooine, where they speak with the people who knew Leia's grandmother, Shmi Skywalker. And Leia gets a gift: Shmi's diary, in which she recorded all her hopes and dreams for her beloved son, Anakin. While Han and Leia get caught up in an ever-escalating adventure on Tatooine, Leia reads her grandmother's diary and learns something of her heritage, something that will change her forever.

Star Wars Force Heretic 2 Refugee (v. 2) Review

Star Wars Force Heretic 2 Refugee (v. 2)
Average Reviews:

Something about the plots in this book just didn't really hold my attention. Han and Leia travel to Bakura and face the prospect of renewed Ssi-Ruuk aggression, while Luke and company search the Chiss library for information about Zonoma Sekot. In practice, both plot lines just seem like attempts to include the Ssi-Ruuk and Chiss in a story. Neither sub-plot is very compelling, and both have drama and intrigue that seem forced, at best. The political scheming is just over the top. Fortunately, the book is saved by the Nom Anor sub-plot. While this doesn't receive quite as much attention as it did in the first Force Heretic book, it's always fun to see Nom Anor in action. Overall, this is one of the weaker entries in the New Jedi Order series.

The second of a mass-market original trilogy charting the beginning of the galaxy's victory over the dreaded Yuuzhan Vong alien invaders. Under the leadership of Luke Skywalker and a combined Jedi-government council, the newly formed Galatic Federation of Free Alliances is doggedly fighting back--and winning. Luke is on a quest for a legend, in hope of bringing back the ultimate answer to the war. Adventures In Hyperspace #2: Shinbone Showdown (Star Wars) Review

Adventures In Hyperspace #2: Shinbone Showdown (Star Wars)
Average Reviews:

If you have young kids who love Star Wars these are great little books. My daughter is 6, maybe just under the age where she could read these easily on her own, but as a "chapter a night" bedtime book it's perfect. I would guess an 8-year-old could probably read these alone without any trouble. It's sweet and humorous without being corny, and a welcome return to the familiar Original Trilogy universe in this Clone Wars era.
These aren't "picture books", but most pages have one color illustrations to accompany the text. Paper quality is pretty low, these are cheap mass market paperbacks, but it gets the job done.

Before Luke met Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine, the closest thing Han Solo and Chewbacca came to galactic politics was a few choice maneuvers around imperial blockades. Instead their lives were spent rambling through the Outer Rim, flying fast, and taking quick jobs to get from place to place--with a few close calls along the way. This new series follows Han and Chewie thoughout time in fully illustrated, easy-to-read, lighthearted adventures, created especially with young readers in mind.

Star Wars Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor - 2008 publication. Review

Star Wars Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor - 2008 publication.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, a warning: you can't take Star Wars: Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor too seriously. Matt Stover's latest entry into the Star Wars universe is at times over the top, but that's the point. As the prologue indicates, this is really a "story within a story." Luke Skywalker expresses his exasperation with tabloid "holodramas" of his adventures and tries to set the record straight. The ensuing story is yet another example of an exaggeration of Skywalker's exploits - and, most likely, Stover's implicit commentary on the direction of the Star Wars Expanded Universe.
The narration for the book often adopts a sarcastic tone or looks into the minds of the characters. Again, odd for a Star Wars novel, but one Stover uses to good effect. Some of the plot devices in the story are quite clever, such as the "holodrama" called "Luke Skywalker and the Jedi's Revenge," a twisted retelling of the events of Star Wars Episode VI - Return of the Jedi. There were a few other funny or insightful references, such as how Han fumes about the too-perfect, too-handsome Mandalorian warriors. I'd always been a bit flabbergasted at how so many other writers treat the Mandalorians as near-sacred, so I'm glad Stover poked some fun at this.
I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 because the plot got convoluted, particularly near the end. The use of gravity bombs and weapons simply went over the top. The end battle scenes were littered with techno-babble, which actually obscured how the Republic forces actually escape (if that's a spoiler, then ). One character, Kar Vastor, is introduced near the end, seems important, but is never really explained. It almost seems like the ending was rushed, or at least not quite as engrossing as the first three-quarters.
Overall, this book is probably not quite right for all audiences. You have to be willing to accept it as a fun adventure story, not worry about whether it constitutes "cannon" in the Star Wars EU. I'll put it this way: if you liked Brian Daley's comic-style Star Wars: The Han Solo Adventures (A Del Rey book), then definitely give Star Wars: Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor a try. If you prefer the more serious tone of the New Jedi Order, you might find yourself frustrated with this book.

yes, it was well-written, yes the characters were well-developed but i was dissapointed in the end. i really liked the main character, who at first appeared to be strong, with real goals turned out to be quite weak, letting them treat her the way they did, and it had a dissapointing ending- in the end when her brother didn't find out what he should have. but i still- still reccomend it. it's well-written and will capture your attention.

Hideouts and Strongholds (Star Wars RPG) Review

Hideouts and Strongholds (Star Wars RPG)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In this day of Star Wars roleplaying you occasionally find a book that isn't so much desired for its content, but its collectability. This is a fair book, though the rave (and price) is often inflated because there are fewer in print than some of the other, more popular, Star Wars roleplaying supplements. I own the book, but only because I was able to pick it up for well under its current market value. It has some very interesting bases as well as adventure ideas, background characters, and other such information. If you need a quick base for your characters to break into or out of, this book allows you to do a quick rip from its content and have an easier adventure. Though, most experienced gamemasters can produce this information on their own. The book does have rules for weapons engineering, starfighter engineering, base engineering, and the like. However, in the grand scheme of things, they constitute one half a page collectively. Most of your characters aren't going to own a base of operations. They're more likely to raid others'.

The Cosmic War: Interplanetary Warfare, Modern Physics and Ancient Texts Review

The Cosmic War: Interplanetary Warfare, Modern Physics and Ancient Texts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In COSMIC WAR, Dr Farrell tackles a subject previously muddled if not thoroughly mucked beyond redemption by the likes of Z. Sitchen and E. Von Daniken. If you are not put off by the ruthless wackiness this subject has already inspired, Farrell will repay your patience many times over.
The book's premise is that Planet Earth was, at minimum, one of the proverbial ants under the dancing elephants at some point at least ten thousand years ago, but more likely much more distant in time from the present. It was a war, a real war, in "heaven" if you like, but very decidedly remembered by most world cultures: Farrell's strength as a researcher is finding nooks and crannies you'd never imagine existed at all, in folklore and lurid biblical accounts of giants, as one example, that, once assembled and placed in a reasonable context, actually support the case for this ancient but galaxy-shattering war.
And make no mistake: Farrell is not outlining some penny-ante Star Wars type shoot-em-up. As another example, he is able to include fairly recent and well-vetted research and speculation about pulsars which, placed in context, indicate this war was, from our point of view, almost vast beyond our ability to imagine. Farrell wisely frames it all as techical speculation, but there is no doubt that human prehistory has some real shockers coming for H Sap. When these shockers start to make the newspapers, I don't doubt they'll look at least something like Farrell's outline indicates. Unless the truth is worse than any of us are capable of speculating, that is (and there is a chance of that, too.)
Minor caveats are probably called for: The book treats texts of a religious nature (Genesis, eg) as allegorical accounts of real history, far removed from their actual source events in time and then redacted down to morality tales. This might be annoying to scriptural literalists of at least two monotheisic religions, so exercise discretion if gifting a local pastor or rabbi.
That aside, THE COSMIC WAR is that greatest of oddities, unabashed speculation that does justice to its subject. With so much "alternative" hisory, science and religion in the hands of cranks and quacks, this present book is an oasis of sanity and a perfect template for the up and coming researcher who wants to see this sort of thing DONE RIGHT.
The Cosmic War, no more and no less, is the way these subjects should have been handled from the start. Had researchers on, say, Atlantis been as careful and bold as Farrell, Plato's story would have had a distinguished academic pedigree by now. Imagine that!

This work presents the full history of the Exploded Planet hypothesis. There is ample evidence across our solar system of cataclysmic and catastrophic destruction events, and many planets are scarred from incredible impacts, and teeter in their orbits from unexplained causes. Rejecting naturalist and materialist assumptions of catastrophism forwarded by other researchers, Farrell seriously asserts that the causes are based in ancient myths of a Cosmic War in the heavens. Incorporating extraterrestrial artefacts, cutting-edge ideas in contemporary physics, and the texts of ancient myths into his argument, Farrell maintains that an ancient interplanetary war was fought in our own solar system with weapons of extraordinary power and sophistication. The book includes: secret technology behind the ancient Tablets of Destinies, the ancient texts telling of such destructions: from Sumeria (Tiamats destruction by Marduk), Egypt (Edfu and the Mars connections), Greece (Saturns role in the War of the Titans) and the ancient Americas; ancient and current mechanisms which could explode planets; and, the true scientific reason for our solar system's asteroid belt.
