Star Wars : Episode II: Attack of the Clones (Piano Solo) Review

Star Wars : Episode II: Attack of the Clones (Piano Solo)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a good sheet music book. The songs that I wanted to be able to play are there, it is easy to follow, and I'm very happy with my purchase. I've only noticed a couple of downsides that keep this from being worth 5 stars. One is that on some of the songs, parts that you may have heard on the soundtrack have not been included in the sheet music. This is a fairly common issue with songs so long, but I mention it because a few of my favorite parts (particularly on Duel of the Fates) were excluded. Secondly, make sure before buying this music that you can handle very large chords. I've found myself needing to modify some chords because they are simply too wide for me. Aside from those two small issues, this is a great book. The music is absolutely beautiful, and my small issues with the book have definitely not kept me from using it constantly.

Inside the Worlds of Star Wars, Episode I - The Phantom Menace: The Complete Guide to the Incredible Locations Review

Inside the Worlds of Star Wars, Episode I - The Phantom Menace: The Complete Guide to the Incredible Locations
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Have the ultimate experience of The Phantom Menace by extending your understanding with this book.
This book is an excellent expansion of the basic story line of Episode I. Based on reading it, you will have much more appreciation for that movie and the later ones in the series.
The book contains star charts to show you where key planets are located (like Naboo, Tatooine, Coruscant, Alderaan, Corellia), which makes many of the plots much easier to understand.
Beyond that benefit, you get detailed maps of each of the planets where action occurs in Episode I. This allows you to see how the various story lines relate to each other spatially. For example, you can see how the Gungan capital of Otoh Gunda relates to the Naboo capital of Theed. In the case of Naboo, this is supplemented with a geological cutaway of the planet to show you how the two capitals are connected by the ocean.
Next, each city is also mapped. So you see the details of Otoh Gunda, Theed, Mos Espa on Tatooine, and the central area of Coruscant. Then specific buildings and space ships are also shown in cutaways. These include the Droid control ship, Watto's junkshop, Anakin's hovel, the Jedi Temple, the Imperial Senate, and the arena for pod races on Tatooine.
Action sequences are then detailed so that you can see where and when each step takes place. This is done for the duel with Darth Maul and Jedi Qui-Gon Jiun and Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Theed palace generator. You also get the battle between the droids and the Gungans. But the best is the full map of the pod race course, with annotations for where each major part of the race's events occurred.
All of these maps are enlivened by detailed notes on the geology, technology, and history of the places displayed. There are many references to Senator Palpatine and the sources of power on Naboo that will be of interest. I thought the expanded information about the Gungan city was especially well done.
The illustrations are new in many cases, which also adds to the reader's pleasure.
My only complaint is that there are several pages with no new information and no interesting detail. An editor should have taken this out or substituted better content. The only argument in their favor is that they help remind you of the story's continuity.
This must have been a lot of fun to create. My suggestion is that you take another story you like and make a similar series of maps and notes. If you have children or grandchildren, this could be a fun project to do together. You might consider Alice in Wonderland as a first subject. Or if you have a friend who loves Star Wars, you could expand on Episode I or any of the other stories in the same way.
May the Force be with you . . . always!

The Star Wars Action Figure Archive Review

The Star Wars Action Figure Archive
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Going all the away up to the end of 1998 and therefore missing all of the Episode One figures and new specialities such as the sail-barge skiff and Stormtrooper with blaster-rifle rack, this is nevertheless the ultimate figure guide. Forget the rest. Continuous fans (who kept the original figures from childhood) to lapsed fans (who had them all, but sold/gave them away) to new fans, this is for you, one and all. Figure histories, oddities, facts and figures, production runs, special campaigns, cards variations: I was extremely impressed with the book and its contents. Each figure gets full-colour treatment accompanied by stills from the various films (reproduced as "evidence") every detail is there: from equipment to weapons. I particularly liked the "rogues gallery" at the beginning where every figure in the original and the later ranges are reproduced in miniature to compare and contrast. This book will have been drooling over figures you desire or mourning over lost, once owned treasures. Get your wallet out now and check you credit limits. Once you get this book you will be hitting every Star Wars store you can find to buy (or re-buy) those essential figures. Would make a great present.

If you are a Star Wars fan and love to collect related material, then you'll find this pocket guide very handy. It culls listings from Wells' omnibus "The Galaxy's Greatest Star Wars Collectibles Price Guide" (1999), while adding new items and categories (There is an entire section of fast food toys that is pulled from contributor Robert J. Sodaro's book "Kiddie Meal Collectibles"--to which Wells was also a contributor). The book's slim design make it ideal for slipping in your pocket while on the prowl at conventions.
Wells and Sodaro are also contributors to "Comics Values Annual 2001" (Alex Malloy).

The Secret History of Star Wars Review

The Secret History of Star Wars
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Kaminsky's rock-solid work unquestionably belongs alongside Rinzler's The Making of Star Wars, as both a companion piece and an in-depth exploration of the creation of the six-film saga, as it actually unfolded.
The very point of this book is to cut through all the marketing, publicity and years of contravention to show the expanding genesis of the Star Wars story from the original drafts to the "Star Wars" standalone film that was "from the Adventures of Luke Skywalker" to the mythically deeper "Star Wars Trilogy: Episodes IV to VI" to the thematic reconstruction of the "Star Wars Saga: The Tragedy of Darth Vader: Episodes I to VI".
In so doing, author Michael Kaminsky provides not only reasonable deductive examinations, but actual facts via published interviews that go back to the earliest sources and the circumstances surrounding the creation of each film, demonstrating in full how important story elements came to be. And how others were dropped. We see how Lucas' personal life impacted and was impacted by the making of the films (Particularly sad is Lucas' obsession with the construction of Skywalker Ranch that not only hampered the creative integrity of Return of the Jedi, but cost him his wife and half his fortune).
Beyond the fascinating unveiling of the true story behind the development of Darth Vader from a mere mustachio-twirling henchman to the greatest villain in movie history to the tragic figure that emerged in Revenge of the Sith, The Secret History of Star Wars is a chronicle of the genius and imperfection of George Lucas. In this, the author remains ever impartial, never stooping to fanboyish complaining, but neither sugarcoating less pleasant facts. This is an unbiased, rational journal that can be considered the definitive history of the formation of the Star Wars saga.
Despite its 533 pages (not counting endnotes), it's a page-turner and is written in an easy-to-follow writing style. Because of its dense matter in untangling early drafts, numerous articles/interviews and various versions of stories, the author is not shy about aiding the reader through the reiteration of certain elements previously explained throughout the book. This is never overdone and proves rather helpful in our era of information overload.
The lid blown off the notion that the saga was the slow unveiling of a thoroughly developed story contained in a volume Lucas wrote in the early 70's, what emerges is the creative reality behind the development of a grand epic not unlike Christopher Tolkien's History of Middle-Earth that showed Tolkien's creative impetus at work. Lucas emerges as a conceptual genius, painstakingly transforming an action-oriented homage to the B-serials of the 30's into a far deeper, grander epic of tragedy and gravitas, hurt only by occasional insecurity, a willingness to present a false picture to the media and at times less-than-artistic concerns. A fully human being emerges through which the struggles of Luke and Anakin can be seen as reflections of their creator, himself a larger-than-life figure beset by triumph and tragedy, moving from humble beginnings to heading his own empire, dually idolized and demonized by the critics and fans, a brilliant man who's contributions to the world of film and literature and pop-culture are only now being to be understood.

Star Wars is one of the most important cultural phenomena of the Western world. The tale of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and the fall and redemption of Anakin Skywalker has become modern myth, an epic tragedy of the corruption of a young man in love into darkness, the rise of evil, and the power of good triumphing in the end.But it didn't start out that way.In this thorough account of one of cinema's most lasting works, Michael Kaminski presents the true history of how Star Wars was written, from its beginnings as a science fiction fairy tale to its development over three decades into the epic we now know, chronicling the methods, techniques, thought processes, and struggles of its creator. For this unauthorized account, he has pored through over four hundred sources, from interviews to original scripts, to track how the most powerful modern epic in the world was created, expanded, and finalized into the tale an entire generation has grown up with.

Star Wars Blueprints: The Ultimate Collection Review

Star Wars Blueprints: The Ultimate Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First to tone down the publisher's hype. 5 posters does not constitute an "incredible collection" and there's certainly nothing "ultimate" about it.
Now, the 5 posters are gorgeous. They're printed in vibrant colors on very high quality thick paper that's just shy of being cardboard. On the front of each is a glossy photo and the back has a non-glossy blueprint of one or more items. They would easily rate 5 stars, but...
they come folded and creased, ruining their potential as posters. And if they're not used as posters, they're extremely inconvenient for browsing. As everyone knows, folding and unfolding these will weaken and eventually tear the paper along the creases. But even fresh out of the box, with the creases not yet worn, THEY'RE STILL CREASES!
A five-year-old could look at this and figure out that the posters should have been shipped in a tube. Why the publisher couldn't make that same leap of logic, we'll never know.
So should a Star Wars fan buy these? Absolutely! You'd regret not having these, but you'll also curse the luminary who thought that a rectangular box made the package artsy and stylish.

Who knew that Ben Burtt was so funny? But he is.
Do not...I repeat, do not sneak a read of this book while at work or school. You will get caught when you laugh out loud. It is that funny.
You not only get the phrases that you've probably seen in the previews, but you get "cultural information" that is priceless. And the illustrations by Sergio Aragones are destined to become classics.
But wait! There's more! There's also a "Behind the Sounds" section that goes through how Ben Burtt created many of the sounds Star Wars fans hold dear. And there are also great translations of scenes from the Classic Trilogy that use alien languages.
If you're a Star Wars fan, you'll really love this book. (Thank you DelRey for putting out some humor!) If you're not a fan, but trying to find something for someone who is, then get this book. They'll thank you for it.

The Art of Star Wars Comics: 100 Collectible Postcards Review

The Art of Star Wars Comics: 100 Collectible Postcards
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A nice collection of high-quality cardboard postcards featuring cover art from various Star Wars comics. These are real standard size postcards with an address and message section on the back side. A wide selection of covers are used all the way from the first issue of the original 1977 Marvel series up to more recent Dark Horse runs. My only gripe is the lack of any kind of supporting info. Since most will be collecting these, not mailing them, I think it would have been cooler if they'd have used the back side for verbiage about the art, artist, and comic. At the very least an index or information booklet would have been nice.
A cool, inexpensive gift for any Star Wars or comic lover.

Star Wars Review

Star Wars
Average Reviews:

Arguably, the most significant impact of Star Wars on popular culture was the merchandising of the movie into toys and collectibles with product far outgrossing the record levels the saga achieved in box office sales. Movie merchandise, and toys in particular, with long development times and short public attention spans were rarely seen as lucrative ventures throughout movie history. But in 1977, Star Wars changed all that. Steve Sansweet's book traces the development of the film into the most lucrative movie license in history, showing rare and unproduced toy concepts that were considered but abandoned. With beautiful photos from Steve's personal collection and rare photography from the Kenner archives, the reader sees and learns about the development of the property. When this book was released in 1992, it shook the Star Wars collecting world and still remains timeless today. I keep referring to and pouring through Steve's "Concept" book over and over again. Every Star Wars collector needs to own this book.

Return of the Jedi Sketchbook Review

This is a simple book filled with sketches of beings, places and objects on Tatooine, Endor, The Death Star and a small section on Rebel Spacecraft. The cover is in full color but the sketches and text are black and white, holding true to what a sketchbook is. It shows the evolution of the designs and offers a little bit of text. The Contributors are Joe Johnston and Nilo Rodis-Jamero with extra material by Ralph McQuarrie and Norman Reynolds. This is for the collector and may not serve any purpose to the passing fan, especially since it is out of print. I have enjoyed this for years.

As soon as I got this book, I went through the WHOLE thing cover to cover. It was great finding things I had (and kicking myself for things I wish I still had :) ). When I started to wonder if there was a Star Wars _____, I'd look through the book and there it was! There are definitely thousands of pictures - problem is they're tiny. If you don't have the greatest vision, a magnifying glass would help.
I did also find some typos between what was identified in the picture and the id description (I'd seen the item before so I could tell the description was wrong). If you're looking for information on the trading cards, this is the right place. I'd say probably at least 1/4 of the book is nothing but trading card information.
For the price and what the book was trying to accomplish (categorize just about any known Star Wars item on earth), it's well worth the price. It brought back some great memories too so I think it's still a great buy.

Star Wars: The Magic of Myth (Star Wars.) Review

Star Wars: The Magic of Myth (Star Wars.)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book attempts to explain Star Wars in the context of patterns found throughout the mythology and legends of various cultures. The success of the film, the book claims, is due in no small part to the fact that the film's story is a composite of all the things that make mythical stories endure as myths.
To my suprise, however, I found the book to be an excellent commentary on mythology itself - the book is almost as informative in pointing out elements that repeat themselves in mythical stories - the concept of the "hero's journey" - with Luke being our hero - mystical forests as a place of healing (Degobah), etc, as it is in relating these elements to the story of Star Wars.
This book was written to accompany an exhibit of the same name at the National Air & Space Museum in Washington DC, and I was fortunate enough to see the exhibit on tour in San Diego last year. While the exhibit itself was amazing, and filled with various props and spaceship models used in the film, this book is actually more informative than the exhibit and stands exceedingly well on its own.
I love the Star Wars films, though I am certainly no hard-core Star Wars buff. I feel that just about anyone who, like me, loves these films will get a lot of enjoyment from this book.

Not only is it nice to get three new essential guides in one, but to have it in hardcover is even better. The content of this book surpasses any previous guides to the Star Wars Universe. Even though it doesn't include absolutely EVERYTHING that is being constantly introduced through novel, comic, and children's books, it is a great reference guide for everyone ranging from the casual SW fan to avid collectors, and especially to people like myself who are writers of sci-fi trying to join the ranks of other authors that have contributed to the ever expanding universe originally created by George Lucas back in 1976 with the adventures of Luke Skywalker. A lot of effort obviously went into these guides.
