Star Wars Blueprints: The Ultimate Collection Review

Star Wars Blueprints: The Ultimate Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First to tone down the publisher's hype. 5 posters does not constitute an "incredible collection" and there's certainly nothing "ultimate" about it.
Now, the 5 posters are gorgeous. They're printed in vibrant colors on very high quality thick paper that's just shy of being cardboard. On the front of each is a glossy photo and the back has a non-glossy blueprint of one or more items. They would easily rate 5 stars, but...
they come folded and creased, ruining their potential as posters. And if they're not used as posters, they're extremely inconvenient for browsing. As everyone knows, folding and unfolding these will weaken and eventually tear the paper along the creases. But even fresh out of the box, with the creases not yet worn, THEY'RE STILL CREASES!
A five-year-old could look at this and figure out that the posters should have been shipped in a tube. Why the publisher couldn't make that same leap of logic, we'll never know.
So should a Star Wars fan buy these? Absolutely! You'd regret not having these, but you'll also curse the luminary who thought that a rectangular box made the package artsy and stylish.

Yoda In Action (DK READERS) Review

Yoda In Action (DK READERS)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

DK has a remarkable line of 'Reader' products. The Star Wars line now includes stories about the Clone Wars, classic star wars, and career paths for the Jedi knight.
"Yoda in Action", written by Heather Scott is an enjoyable book that pits Yoda into a violent negotiation with King Katuunko (and battle with Dooky and Ventress). As a level 3 reader, it is not indepth, but satisfies the young at heart with a hankering for master Yoda. Do you really think that Yoda can take out a thousand clones and hardware?
Why don't you find out. I love the art for the book, and am really not sure if it is taken from the new series, or done especially for this book. The King reminds me of a certain part shop operator on a planet far, far away....
Pretty good book, even for an old guy like me!

The Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones Movie Scrapbook is a fascinating book containing the entire plot of the film, accompanied with a series of great photos taken from the film. Star Wars: Epic Battles (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) (DK Readers: Level 4 (Prebound)) Review

Star Wars: Epic Battles (Turtleback School and Library Binding Edition) (DK Readers: Level 4 (Prebound))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As the title suggests, "Epic Battles" is a look at combat in the Star Wars universe. It's a terrific premise for a book since young viewers have often found the fight scenes to be one of the most compelling dynamics of the story. The book takes a thematic approach and looks at land and space battles. The major conflicts are well covered including the campaigns that happened on Naboo, Geonosis, Kashyyyk, Hoth and Endor. In addition to the major space skirmishes, time is spent on the more exciting dogfights like Obi-Wan Kenobi's Jedi Starfighter vs. Jango Fett's Slave I. In addition, Author Simon Beecroft discusses the saga's most interesting lightsaber duels. The book does in excellent job of showing how the Sith are behind much of the galaxy's discord. A strength of the title is that is pulls the entire saga (all six films) together. A glossary is included. In terms of the illustrations, the vast majority were lifted from the films. While the pictures are high quality, the writing is also good. Given the 48 page length and vocabulary level, this title is best suited to readers on a fourth or fifth grade level. "Epic Battles" offers an exciting look at the great conflicts of the Star Wars saga.

My 5-year-old is obsessed with all things Lego and Star Wars. This book is awesome! It's fun for him and funny to read. My husband read it to my son for bedtime last night and came down asking me if there were more like it. Even he enjoyed it! Definitely worth the money.

The Star Trek Cookbook Review

The Star Trek Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A Star-Trek cookbook narrated by Neelix the Chef was a nice idea, but poor editing, and not enough supervision by people who know Star Trek characters, have made this book a mess.
First, some of the recipes themselves are poorly written and edited. For example, the Peptide Cake recipe does not specify the pan size. (The recipe mentions a "sheet-cake pan," the standard size of which is too large for the recipe.) The recipe itself is a little strange, as it is a sponge cake that contains many egg yolks but *no* egg whites. Since I don't know what the writers were trying to achieve, I can't say for sure that they made a mistake, but I suspect that the egg whites were left out by accident. There are other recipes for which I suspect ingredients are missing as well. This would not surprise me, due to the number of typos that are scattered throughout the text.
Second, some of the recipes are inconsistent with the book's narration, as well as with information from the tv shows. For example, after having confirmed that "raktajino" is a beverage similar to strong coffee (and having printed a recipe for making raktajino out of coffee beans,) "Neelix" offers a recipe for raktajino cake that contains no coffee! In another example, "Neelix" says that "parthos" can be made out of brussels sprouts. Any one who has seen "The Next Generation" knows that parthos looks nothing like brussels sprouts, and everything like bright green spinach. Finally, while the book gives a reasonable recipe for "Klingon blood pie," (basically a steak and kidney pie,) there is also a version, called a "favorite" of a Klingon character, that is really a sweet cherry pie. To pass a cherry pie off as "blood pie" is to say that the publishers really don't know--and don't care-- what Star Trek is all about.
Third, there are inconsistancies in the narration. On page 115, "Neelix" says that Commander Riker's favorite Klingon dish is "bregit lung"; on page 117 he says that Riker's favorite Klingon dish is "pipius claw."
An annoying aspect of the book is padding with recipes that have nothing to do with Star Trek. These recipes are given teasers that are meant to connect them with Star Trek characters. But who needs a recipe for oatmeal on the doubtful assertion that it's Jake Sisko's favorite breakfast, or a recipe for green beans (improbably called "Klingon green beans," as if any Klingon would actually sit at the same table with them!)
The book strictly avoids beverage recipes that contain alcohol, so this book is of no use to those who want to recreate ales and spirits for taste as well as looks.
The book has its good points-- it tells you how to recreate prop food, and some of the recipes are good, even thought they have little to do with Star Trek, and some of the stars have contributed good recipes.

Is there one food that humans, Klingons, Bajorans, and Vulcans would like? If so, what would it taste like? How would you prepare it? Could you find all the ingredients locally? This is the task that faces Neelix, chef for the U.S.S. Voyager™, every time he takes on the challenge of trying to feed its crew of 140 food critics. But over the course of their journey, Neelix's learned a few tricks of the trade. He had to, just as a matter of self-preservation. Ethan Phillips, in the persona of Neelix, and William J. Birnes, the New York Times bestselling coauthor of The Day After Roswell, throw wide the vaults of interstellar haute cuisine, revealing for the first time the secret preparation techniques behind all those exotic dishes and drinks. The favorite foods of characters from every Star Trek series and movie are here, all adapted for easy use in twentieth-century kitchens. The Star Trek Cookbook also features a complete guide for whipping up the all the drinks served at Quark's. Fun, and easy to use, the Star Trek Cookbook is your indispensable guide to the food of the stars!

I'm not 8 years old, but my son tells me this is a great book for Star Wars fans. I love him reading about heroic action. This book's reading level is pretty easy -- first graders and up can manaage it. My son assures me that "even big kids don't get bored with this book."
There you have it.

Star Wars Visionaries Review

Star Wars Visionaries
Average Reviews:

I saw this Trade Paperback in my local Comic Shop and realized it is a book of short stories that grew out of artwork that was "cut" from Episode 3.
Darth Maul. Grevious. Luke. Obi Wan. Wookies. And tons of fantastic Art. Out of the entire book one chapter kinda stinks. The Wat Tambor story kinda reminded me of Cheech Wizard or something. Not waht I thought Wat was going to look like in comics...
But thats it. The rest of the stories are fantastic! Loved the book. If you are a fan, and waiting patiently for Episode 3, this is a taste of things to come.
Enjoy!

Uprising (Star Wars Rebel Force) Review

Uprising (Star Wars Rebel Force)
Average Reviews:

When this Star Wars Series, basically intended for younger readers, first came out I had no idea how long the Series would last. I did know that the time of the series is set right after Star Wars Ep IV A New Hope. The six-book series was well crafted and set easy to read for the younger readers. It also appeals to the serious Star Wars fan, as the story Still entertains, and older fans won't feel the books are beneath them. This is apparently the end of this series and it is a very quick but enjoyable series. Fans of all ages can enjoy it at a great low price. I definitely recommend these books.

Star Wars Adventures: Princess Leia And The Royal Ransom Review

Star Wars Adventures: Princess Leia And The Royal Ransom
Average Reviews:

This is a great story that would of appeared in the Empire series if they would not of canceled it. A great short story and a true to character depiction of Han and Leia's early romance days. Always a favorite of mine the bounty hunters get a new addition to their ranks with the introduction of a new character known as Dust. The art in this story only takes a moment to get used to but once you start the story it was hard to put down. Chewie whips some tail in this issue and Han gets the crap beat out of him so expect nothing new on those fronts. A great read that collects the entire story of what would of been a three part series in Empire. My Reviews on single issue comics can be found on [...]

Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Chewie are racing to deliver vital information to the Rebel Alliance. But Han allows himself to be distracted with the idea of earning some fast credits. Ignoring pleas from Leia, and the threat of trailing Imperial Star Destroyers, Han makes an unscheduled stop at a hot smuggling hub to pick up some cargo. Unfortunately, the crate he takes aboard the Millennium Falcon doesn't contain the kind of contraband he was led to believe. It's not simple or harmless - it's the kidnapped femme fatale, Princess Mi!

Yes, Santa gave in to our son. This is not normally a book I would buy for him, but he is a Star Wars fan. This also ties in to the "Deadliest Warrior" series he and his dad watch on TV. So, it's a great book for a boy like him, who loves the "Star Wars" series, is an accomplished martial arts student, and enjoys "Deadliest Warrior." It's a nice break from academics.

Anakin in Action (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)
Average Reviews:

The DK early reading program is exceptional. Licensing popular franchises for different levels. Anakin is rated 2, while the companion book, Watch out For Jabba the Hut is level 1.
For those who have seen the Clone Wars, this is a good way to explain the story to young viewers. With art taken from the film, these books are topical, and use appropriate vocabulary. Want to raise a young Star Wars fan, pick these up and before long, you'll find your child reading any one of the Star Wars novels.
Great job. Simon Beecroft has a remarkable skill in writing for different age groups.
Keep up the great work DK.

LEGO Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary Review

Very nice hardback book with lots of stunning pictures of what else? Star Wars Legos!
We are big fans of Legos in general and this book did not disappoint. It came with a bonus Luke Skywalker mini-figure. As with all DK books, you get great pictures, thorough descriptions, and just a generally enjoyable book to collect or read.
I bought 2 copies of this book, one to read, and one to collect.
The only thing that bothered me a (very tiny) little bit was how the Luke Skywalker mini-fig was packaged. At first glance it looks like a much thicker book, but about half of the thickness is a spacer placed inside the book to make room for the mini-fig, so it lays flush with the front cover. I posted some pictures on the main item page if you want to see what I mean. Nothing that I would knock a star off for though.
Overall, we are VERY happy with this book. Great price for a quality book that will not disappoint young and old!
