Star Wars Blueprints: The Ultimate Collection Review

Star Wars Blueprints: The Ultimate Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First to tone down the publisher's hype. 5 posters does not constitute an "incredible collection" and there's certainly nothing "ultimate" about it.
Now, the 5 posters are gorgeous. They're printed in vibrant colors on very high quality thick paper that's just shy of being cardboard. On the front of each is a glossy photo and the back has a non-glossy blueprint of one or more items. They would easily rate 5 stars, but...
they come folded and creased, ruining their potential as posters. And if they're not used as posters, they're extremely inconvenient for browsing. As everyone knows, folding and unfolding these will weaken and eventually tear the paper along the creases. But even fresh out of the box, with the creases not yet worn, THEY'RE STILL CREASES!
A five-year-old could look at this and figure out that the posters should have been shipped in a tube. Why the publisher couldn't make that same leap of logic, we'll never know.
So should a Star Wars fan buy these? Absolutely! You'd regret not having these, but you'll also curse the luminary who thought that a rectangular box made the package artsy and stylish.

Empire Triumphant: Race, Religion And Rebellion in the Star Wars Films Review

Empire Triumphant: Race, Religion And Rebellion in the Star Wars Films
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The author, Kevin J. Wetmore, Jr, starts out with a few points that should be repeated, even in the review. One, the films are all products of their era. Two, like it or not, the films are not just movies. They DO influence us and pass on values and ideas, even some that Lucas didn't put into them. They can't be dismissed or ignored. Like it or not the Star Wars films reach a lot of people and do deliver messages to them about race, sex and religion.
The book debates how the films treat women vs. men, Asians vs. Europeans, religion, rebellion and even how the films treat EMPIRE! Do we want kids to see these movies? That is up to you but the book does dive into the layers and shows us how the movies do SEEM to lean towards Empires, put men above women and do treat Asian culture and history like myth while treating European culture and history with more respect. While the book is said to be based on all six films, it seems that once or twice it seems to only focus on the first five. It is as if the last one, Episode Three, was not yet finished when the book was. It feels, in some places, to be badly put together or only half thought out, like somebody took their class lectures and molded them into a book.

Star Wars: The Magic of Myth (Star Wars.) Review

Star Wars: The Magic of Myth (Star Wars.)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book attempts to explain Star Wars in the context of patterns found throughout the mythology and legends of various cultures. The success of the film, the book claims, is due in no small part to the fact that the film's story is a composite of all the things that make mythical stories endure as myths.
To my suprise, however, I found the book to be an excellent commentary on mythology itself - the book is almost as informative in pointing out elements that repeat themselves in mythical stories - the concept of the "hero's journey" - with Luke being our hero - mystical forests as a place of healing (Degobah), etc, as it is in relating these elements to the story of Star Wars.
This book was written to accompany an exhibit of the same name at the National Air & Space Museum in Washington DC, and I was fortunate enough to see the exhibit on tour in San Diego last year. While the exhibit itself was amazing, and filled with various props and spaceship models used in the film, this book is actually more informative than the exhibit and stands exceedingly well on its own.
I love the Star Wars films, though I am certainly no hard-core Star Wars buff. I feel that just about anyone who, like me, loves these films will get a lot of enjoyment from this book.

Culture, Identities and Technology in the Star Wars Films: Essays on the Two Trilogies (Critical Explorations in Science Fiction and Fantasy) Review

Culture, Identities and Technology in the Star Wars Films: Essays on the Two Trilogies (Critical Explorations in Science Fiction and Fantasy)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I would recommend "Culture, Identities and Technology in the Star Wars Films" to fans of the series as well as to teachers. The book covers a wide range of topics within the Star Wars universe, from capitalism to race to feminism - there's even a chapter on the fetishization of objects. Most essays discuss all six films and though this could cause the chapters to veer in too many directions, the writing in each remains focused and clear.
The highlight of the collection is the essay "Feminism and the Force: Empowerment and Disillusionment in a Galaxy Far, Far Away," which compares the surprising feminine strength of Princess Leia with Padme Amidala's "weepy stereotype of a woman coming undone." The essay goes on to defend Padme and to draw parallels between her and modern victims of domestic abuse, but the real heart of the article is the section on Leia. Truly a great book of essays.

The Secrets of Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire

For Star Wars fans of the mid-Nineties, liking Star Wars was actually a defining characteristic - it wasn't frowned upon as Star Trek unfortunately is - and any new info or project was savagly consumed. So, when Lucasfilm announced it's 'Star Wars Movie Without The Movie', fans were thrilled.
This book ties together every chapter unveiled in multimedia (the book, the comic, the toys, the CD, and the video game) and weaves together the entire story, from inception to execution. It's not narrative of course, it's a guide, but for anyone who wants the entire story of Episode V 1/2 compiled or explained, or just wants to revisit 1996, this is a great book.

The Complete Locations of Star Wars: Inside the Worlds of the Entire Star Wars Saga Review

The Complete Locations of Star Wars: Inside the Worlds of the Entire Star Wars Saga
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is by far my favorite series of the DK Star Wars books. The locations and maps are excellent and one can spend hours just poring over the detail in one painting. I've been a Star Wars fan since the age of six in the spring of 1977 and I've always loved the technical aspects os the Star Wars fantasy. This book delivers in spades.
However, this goes for someone who hasn't already purchased, Episode 1 Complete Locations, Episode 2 complete Locations, and Classic Trilogy Complete Locations. As for me, I've already spent $20 per book for the first three and now DK decides to charge $40 (msrp) so I can buy all of it again? Yes, I want the new Revenge locations, as I've mentioned this is a fantastic series, but asking me to spend an additional $20 for material I've already spent $60 on is just poor business.
So, I highly recommend this book for anyone buying these for the first time - 5 stars. For anyone who has already purchased this series in years past - do as I will do. I will buy this book and then return the prior ones to the brick & mortar bookstore (it's ok, I used to manage one of them superstores, they just put it on the shelf and sell it again or return it to DK for credit) - 3 stars to DK for that marketing ploy.
In the end - 4 stars overall.

This book provides the reader with a rare glimpse of a lot of concept art and even model making that ILM produced for the 3 Star Wars and 3 Indiana Jones movies. And unlike, the Art of Star Wars Episode 1 for example, there is more text than simple art credits, and includes descriptions on how the different tools (say, matte paintings), are used for effects in the films. The book also provides an excellent look at ILM's story boards, which are usually so well drawn that they would make ideal comic books. It has a beautiful series of pictures of props-from Colt pistols to blasters, from scimitars to lightsabers, all held together with great informative text by Mark Gotta Vaz and Shinji Hata. This is one of my favorites.

If you've been lucky enough to see "The Magic of Myth" in one of its many permutations, this book is a great supplement to and a wonderful reminder of just how cool that exhibit was. If you haven't seen the exhibit, this book is still great to have for it's back-story on the origins of the trilogy.
I'm not the most well-read person around so it was a lot of fun to learn how Lucas' characters and story were shaped by (or copied from) myths and legends of other times and cultures. Reading this book has led me to explore some of the material that Lucas borrowed from in creating Star Wars. I'm a big SW nut, but it's nice to get my head out of the SW universe and out into other forms of art and literature.
If you don't feel like reading, this book is also full of GREAT photos from the trilogy.
I keep this one on the shelf next to Joseph Campbell's "Power of Myth." It is a nice complement to Campbell's book.

I got this book around the time it came out, and 3 years later it is still the first book I go to for Star Wars look ups. Its biggest problem is that it is dated and cuts off right after Vector Prime, so it is not much help for looking up things in the New Jedi Order. That being said, it is still very valid and apart from the NJO and various newer comic book series, it covers pretty much everything. This book is a must for any serious Star Wars reader, and I highly recommend it as such. I would like to see a new edition with up-to-date material released after Episode III comes out.

The Essential Guide to Planets and Moons (Star Wars) Review

The Essential Guide to Planets and Moons (Star Wars)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Essential Guide to Planets and Moons is definitely the least essential and worst of all of the guides. Instead of going into the culture and ecology of the planets like it should have, it simply tells us the story of whatever adventure our heroes had there. We get that from reading the novels! This book would have been so much neater if it had told us something at all about life on these planets.
We don't even get a neat map of the planets -- instead, a tiny black and white globe that isn't helpful, with a 1"x3" little inset map of the area we have heard most about in the books. Beneath that is a little illustration of a couple of people from that planet, most of them pretty bad and unhelpful. And then we get some more bad pictures of some native flora and fauna and some corny captions beneath them.
This book is quite a waste of time and money!

The New Essential Guide to Droids (Star Wars) Review

The New Essential Guide to Droids (Star Wars)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Finally a New Essential Guide that can truly be called "Essential!" This may be the best essential guide (only the New Essential Chronology competes with it) written. Dan Wallace (with the aid of Able Pena and Pablo Hidalgo) has gone over every nook and cranny of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and if there's a droid to be found, a detail to uncover, a story-element to expose, he's done it!
After the disappointing New Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels (which followed the trend of ignoring a lot of early Expanded Universe sources), I thought I was through with the NEG's. The New Essential Chronology changed that and this book has now upped the ante on ALL future Star Wars reference books!
Everything is here. Entire pages are devoted to characters from rare and even out-of-print continuity sources, from old newspaper strips by Russ Manning, to the Droids animated show and spin-off Star Comics series, to Alan Moore's rare stint on Marvel UK's Empire Strikes Weekly (reprinted in Devilworlds) to the requisite but often overlooked pages of Marvel Star Wars (reprinted recently as A Long Time Ago volumes 1-7), L. Neill Smith's brilliant Lando Calrissian trilogy, RPG sources, novels, young readers books, Dark Horse comics; It's all here and much, much more! Not a stone is left unturned from 1977 to 2006, nearly 30 years of continuity has gone into this book that actually succeeds in demonstrating that the much maligned "appliances" of Star Wars are really fascinating creations in their own right, and every bit as intriguing as their human masters.
Wallace handles the text expertly, weaving bits of continuity to form a much stronger and cohesive whole. This is not a guide for techies either, or even just for those who've read every original source out there, but rather it's a book for the average Star Wars reader written with a narrative structure. Far from simply providing the origin and purpose of the droid in question, each entry features fascinating short biographical tales of some of the famous examples that caused either salvation or destruction to the galaxy! Also, there's a history of droids section that details the dawn of their inception to their persecution and abolition at the hands of the Yuuzahn Vong. Also, as an added bonus, the illustrations here are stunningly realized.
This is definitely a guide you don't want to miss and represents the high watermark Star Wars authors can achieve when they combine love of the universe with intelligent, diligent research and a deft hand at fixing the plotholes and connecting the dots. For from these often disparate pieces, some of the great tales emerge. This book is proof of that.

The New Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels (Star Wars) Review

The New Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels (Star Wars)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was quite excited upon learning that an update was in the works for one of my favorite Star Wars books of all time. The original Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels was (and still largely is) a one-of-a-kind work. Prior to that, most of the ships of the expanded universe appeared only in printed text- not illustrations. Doug Chiang and Troy Vigil really added life to the ships of the Star Wars universe.
The New Essential Guide is something less than new. The full color illustrations are the best part of it- especially those that depict vessels not shown in the previous work. Additionally, there's some background on vehicle manufacturers, famous battles, and comparisons between vessel sublight and hyperspace speed.
Other than this, however, the book falls short of its previous incarnation. The schematics largely tell you things you could have inferred just by looking at the picture (The ship has a hull?! No way!) and the text is watered down for a younger audience. There's not as many hard facts or numbers, including no comparison at all of shield or hull strength (something I, a long-time SW space sim player, was hoping for). There is a simple explanation of the basic technologies at the start, appropriately titled 'A Layperson's Guide to Technology.' It seems the author and publishers aren't aware that most kids nowadays are more familiar with technical jargon than adults.
Aside from these minor complaints, there is one major issue I have with this book. That is, only a handful of new ships are shown, and most of these are from the prequels. Frankly, other books like the Incredible Cross Sections series have covered these vehicles better than the Essential Guide could hope to. There's also the issue of beating a dead horse. If you don't know what an X-wing looks like by now, you probably won't be buying this book. Why recap material that's been published a dozen times already? There's a whole load of new ships in the New Jedi Order series alone (i.e. the Bothan Assault Frigate, Star Defender, Ranger Gunship). Why not present those?
The New Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels does have some cool features, but aside from the updated color illustrations, it is less than 'new' and hardly 'essential.' I would recommend the original Essential Guide over this one, and advise those that already own it to check out other guides first.

Jedi vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force (Star Wars) Review

Jedi vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force (Star Wars)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The "Essential Guide" series to the Star Wars universe has (perhaps surprisingly) never had a book devoted entirely to the "Force". And this one does not disappoint! The attempt at an "in-universe" historical style (supposedly, the "author" is a Jedi in the New Jedi Order) makes it immersive and fun to read. The information deals with a wide variety of Force-related subjects that any Star Wars fan would be interested in: from the origins and history of the Jedi and Sith orders to the construction of lightsabers and Jedi martial arts. The only thing that I personally felt to be missing is a more "scientific" or "physical" explanation of the Force and its workings (like in-universe scientific theories on how the Force is produced and how it interacts with regular matter and energy), but that might have conflicted with the "historian's perspective" that it adopts instead.
Despite any shortcomings in the text itself, however, the illustrations alone make it worth the complete 5 stars! They are simply breathtaking... and the amount of time and sweat put into them by the artists must have been staggering. It's strange to say it, but it feels more like an art book than a dry listing of Star Wars lore! Any Star Wars fan would love these wonderful works of art!

The Illustrated Star Wars Universe (Star Wars) Review

The Illustrated Star Wars Universe (Star Wars)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Take the artistic talents of acclaimed production artist Ralph McQuarrie and the writing skills of prolific author Kevin J. Anderson (The Jedi Academy Trilogy) and you get The Illustrated Star Wars Universe, a coffee table book that gives readers a glimpse of the various planets showcased in George Lucas' original Star Wars Trilogy (1977-83).
Using McQuarrie's production sketches and paintings for A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and other Lucasfilm projects (including the Endor-based television specials of the mid-1980s plus preliminary sketches for the 1997 Special Edition updates), Anderson takes readers on a grand tour of the most important planets seen in the Luke Skywalker/Darth Vader half of the Star Wars Saga. Starting with Tatooine, the desert world that is the home world to both Anakin Skywalker and his son Luke and ending with Alderaan, the planet where Princess Leia was hidden from her father and was doomed to be destroyed by the Death Star, eight planets are described in individual chapters, each told not by one omniscient narrator but by eight different observers, each with his or her point of view and/or political agenda.
For instance, while the chapter on Tatooine is an anthropologist's dispassionate and scientific report on the desert planet's hostile environment and its hardy inhabitants (ranging from the nomadic and hostile Tusken Raiders and scavenging Jawas to the resilient human moisture farmers and their homesteads), the description of Coruscant, the massive city-planet which was once the seat of power of the Old Republic and is the capital of Emperor Palpatine's Galactic Empire, is a pro-Imperial propaganda article authored by Pollus Hax, the Emperor's chief public relations expert and "spin doctor."
Although much of the artwork featured in The Illustrated Star Wars Universe has been published elsewhere (either in the various Art of Star Wars books relating to the Classic Trilogy or in McQuarrie's Star Wars Portfolios), this combination of production paintings and Anderson's vivid and imaginative text works wonderfully and adds detail and background to both the movies and the post-Episode VI Expanded Universe novels, including Anderson's own JedI Academy trilogy and Darksaber.

The New Essential Guide to Characters (Star Wars) Review

Truly essential! Doubtless any Star Wars fan will find this book as fun, informative and entertaining as I did. I have the earlier edition as well, and while it was good in it's time, it became hideousely out of date quickly, and a new edition was definitely needed. I'd definitely say that this fantastic book is the best of the Essential Guides period; the author's clear, straightford, and unbiased tone are what really gives the book it's charm. Many of the minor inconsistensies between the novels are easily explained away here as well. And of course the illustrations. WOW!!! They certainly picked the right guy for this job; everyone is perfect, just how I imagined them. Among my favorites were Mara (deadly yet beautiful), Jacen (Wow, who ever guessed he'd be that cute), and Tsavong Lah (delightfully hideous). My only minor gripe is that a few characters, such as Callista for example, who hasn't even been MENTIONED in eight or nine years, kept a spot in the actual book, whereas a key character in the New Jedi Order such as Tenel Ka, or Jagged Fel were reduced to the "other persons of note" section in the back. Being that I despise Callista (always have always will) and adore Tenel Ka this irritated me enough that I took off a star for it. Desipite this however, I definitely recommend this book for any Star Wars fan, young or old. It would probably help if you have a fairly well read backround in the Expanded Universe, but this one promises to be entertaining even to amateur fans. Oh, also worthy of note, major AOTC spoilers in this one.
