The LEGO Book Review

The LEGO Book
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I pre-ordered this set for my 12 yr old son. I received it yesterday and I must say I am quite pleased with the set. I found myself thoroughly enjoying the colorful pages and skimming over all the mini figures and sets that have evolved over the decades. Viewing the pages provided a bit of nostalgia for me as I was able to share my own memories with my son. This set is great for the Lego Collector or enthusiast. I really enjoyed the overview of the history of Lego along with the timelines and descriptions of manufacturing, etc.
If you are looking for "building tips" or "an idea book" this is not the book for you, instead I would look into the purchase of: "The Unofficial Lego Builder's Guide" by Allan Bedford, or the DK Lego Modelers series that have booklets containing ways to create characters using common lego pieces that you may already have in your collection.

My 5-year-old is obsessed with all things Lego and Star Wars. This book is awesome! It's fun for him and funny to read. My husband read it to my son for bedtime last night and came down asking me if there were more like it. Even he enjoyed it! Definitely worth the money.

Though this is a book for young children, at the age of 30, I found, after seeing the movie, it helped me to understand the characters, planets, weaponry, and so much more. Do you know what determines the color of a light saber? Or how a Jedi is determined and at what age they start training? That and so many other answers are given in this book, it's packed full of great photo's and even gives a little lesson on the people who brought the film to being. Highly recommended!

Lego Star Wars (Prima Official Game Guide) Review

Lego Star Wars (Prima Official Game Guide)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Normally, Prima guides are top-of-the-line. Normally, they provide everything you need in a concise and easily navigated form. Unfortunately, this guide isn't the norm.
The problem is simple- the actual "walkthrough" of the game is presented in straight text, with basically no indexes or tabs. Want to know when or how a specific character is unlocked? Good luck. The closest you'll get are tiny indicators of what characters star in each sub-chapter of the game (these charactes are always unlocked when completing that sub-chapter)- you'll have to page between sections trying to spy the location Story characters appear. And some characters have to be unlocked outside the normal game- there's not even a listing of who those characters are or what the unlocking requirements are.
The biggest reason I bought this Guide was because, to find 100% of the hidden items, you have to retrace your steps from Story Mode in what's called "Free Play". Some areas intentionally require certain characters' special abilities to reach, and these characters can only be accessed by unlocking them elsewhere in Story Mode then coming back and selecting them for Free Play. Long story short- the sub-chapter breakdowns don't even tell you what characters you'll need when you come back for Free Play except in small inserts dispersed through the normal text. If all you want to know it what two characters you need to select to get 100% of the secrets in a Free Play area- you'll have to read all the way through the text (again).
The guide is wonderfully illustrated. The maps are accurate and easy to read, and the narration of the game is thorough. You will unlock everything in the game if you have the patience to read and re-read this guide many times. But in the end, it might be much more reading than it needs to be. If you can find a free online guide (or even another companie's guide to this game!), stick with that. I just can't recommend this product very highly at all.

Lego Star Wars 2: The Original Trilogy (Prima Official Game Guide) Review

Lego Star Wars 2: The Original Trilogy (Prima Official Game Guide)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A game as big and as full of extras and secrets as Lego Star Wars II, you may need a leg up. Getting some of the hidden Lego Canisters and figuring out what you have to do in Freeplay mode can be bothersome. So of course, there's a strategy guide to give you a leg up. You may find you need it, but on the whole, the guide could've been way better. It isn't that the guide is bad, it's that it's heavily disorganized.
The guide begins, as most of them do, with the basics. Getting you used to the gameplay the way the instruction booklet is supposed to. Here, however, they give you a profile for each and every character. They tell you how to use each character, but to be honest, it's all the same. They give you a little mini-profile and then what they can do. All the jedi can do the same thing: The force, and unfortunately the guide will mention that for every jedi. Afterwards it talks about the transportation used in the game. From speeders to AT-ST walkers.
The guide then talks about the Mos Eisley Cantina. It only talks about the things you can do, but it's not really that in-depth on it. The good news is the guide doesn't have to be in-depth on it. It's easy enough to figure out on your own.
The walkthrough is where I begin to have some of the bigger problems with the guide. Each chapter begins with the overview provided by the game, and then a few story frames depicting what happens in the cutscenes before the start of the actual level. The problem with the walkthrough, however, is that it is heavily disorganized. Nothing is divided into sections (save for the call outs to freeplay mode). So in essence, if you come to a point where you need the guide but you haven't opened it, it'll be hard to find where you are in the walkthrough.
There are no maps to speak of throughout the walkthrough. I wouldn't have a problem with the lack of maps if there were an abundance of screenshots. There aren't an abundance of screenshots. Some of what the guide is trying to say can be rather confusing for the visual learner. They tell me to do something, but there's no screenshot to clarify what they're talking about. What screenshots there are are very small and blurry. To compensate for the blurry and small screenshots there are captions at least. This really does make the guide far better to use than it sounds.
The walkthrough could've been better on the whole. With a little more organization and bit more clarity it could've been far more useful. It does, however, become really helpful when playing through freeplay mode. If you go through freeplay mode, the guide calls out what you can do in freeplay. Since these sections aren't as long as the main walkthrough, they're not as tedious to read through to find yourself.
The walkthrough will get you through the game, it's just that you'll spend much more time reading the walkthrough than playing the game itself.
The guide covers the Bounty Hunter Missions and Gold Brick Bonuses. It hardly says anything about the Power Bricks which I could deal with. However, the part that could be on the divide for most people is the simple fact of whether or not you care that it gives you the cheats to unlock other characters. In some ways, it makes sense that the guide wouldn't give you something like this. After all, cheat codes should be left inside cheat books and the internet. Then again, a strategy guide is a cheap way to get ahead in the game, and just like looking up a cheat, it's optional to whether or not you're going to use it. Personally, a list of cheats should be in the guide, but I won't hold it against the guide one bit.
The main thing that makes me not recommend the guide is the highly disorganized walkthrough. For once I'd much rather go to GameFAQs. There are much more organized and detailed walkthroughs than this.

Star Wars Storybook Review

Star Wars Storybook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a terrific children's storybook that came out about the same time or shortly after the original movie was released back in the '70s. Yes, the movie was great, but so is this book. Every page has at least one full-color live-action shot from the movie. Many of the pictures nearly take up the entire page, but there is still room for Geraldine Richelson to retell the classic story in terms a child can understand. If parent's still read bedtime stories to kids, this should be one of them.

We ordered this for my Son's school, at the same time as we ordered the hardback version (LEGO Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary) for ourselves. They look to be identical except that this one does not include the mini-fig. As a result it also doesn't have the 1/4 inch spacer mat inside the front cover.
As for content, there are a few pages at the front that are a listing of all the lego star wars sets. After that the pages are much like the normal The Visual Dictionary of Star Wars, Episodes IV, V, & VI: The Ultimate Guide to Star Wars Characters and Creatures, except with close up pictures of legos, rather than movie stills.

Star Wars: Battles for the Galaxy Review

Star Wars: Battles for the Galaxy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As most of you already know the Star Wars franchise has released score upon score of books that detail everything from the heroes, villains, aliens and monsters to spaceships, weapons, planets, history and more. For fans of Star Wars you can get books on just about all aspects of that universe to spark your imagination. Battles for the Galaxy is a newer entry into this pantheon of literature, and to be honest it's just a kid's book. For the older fans looking for new insights into the Star Wars universe this book offers abolutely nothing new. For young readers just getting into Star Wars this is a great book to introduce a lot of those cool things the other books go into greater detail from.
You would think from the cover this book would read like a propaganda piece recruiting support for the Clone Wars. However this is not the case. It is a simple play by play book starting from the very beginning of the prequel trilogy all the way up to it's conclusion back in 1984 (heh heh...). The book essentially chronicles all of the battles from all of the movies with general information on how the battle started and how it ended up.
You also get a little background information on the those involved with the battle. This information is actually pretty neat with little spurts of knowledge like where the Gungans get their plasma balls, how connected Grand Moff Tarkin is with the Empire, and how close the Battle of Endor was. In between notes about battles your kid will also get some nifty illustrations showing just about all of the spaceships, weapons and droids that fought in these battles. No details mind you, just lots and lots of pictures to spur the imagination.
The pictures are bright and full of detail. The text is easy to read and in short columns for segmented reading. This book will really give your children a primer that can lead them to a lifetime of love for the Star Wars universe (as well as hundreds spent on more technical book in their future... but I guess that's the whole idea for Lucasfilm). Does your kid love the battles from Star Wars? Give them this book.

Lego Star Wars Ultimate Sticker Collection (ULTIMATE STICKER COLLECTIONS) Review

Lego Star Wars Ultimate Sticker Collection (ULTIMATE STICKER COLLECTIONS)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've found that these Lego sticker books are well worth the price. Initially they seem expensive, but consider these points:
*The book includes nicely decorated pages with a spot for each sticker.
*The pages are thick and glossy - not cheap, dull paper.
*Stickers are "re-stickable", so if your child puts it in the wrong place or crooked, they can be peeled and re-stuck. We've even been able to unstick them from standard printer paper.
*There's TWO of every sticker. So you can put one on the collector's page, and still have another for making your own creations.
*There's tons of small .5"x.5" miscellaneous sticker as well (along with doubles of each of these, too.
This book is focused on Lego Star Wars, so plenty of stickers to satisfy a fan. You get to see so many pictures of minifigures which you might struggle to find elsewhere. *Note*: You can see what the stickers look like by using the "Look Inside" feature above. Once you click it, then use the search box. Type in a character's name, like "Luke". It'll bring up a preview of many more pages, including some of the actual sticker pages. This way you can also see if a specific character is shown.
Other books are available to explore the City theme, as well as a general book that covers many different themes.
The only negative is that some stickers are very intricate. Since they are die-cut to shape, you might rip the thinner parts. This is where having the extra of every sticker comes in handy.
All in all a great value.

My kids were thrilled to get this and loved looking everything up - so detailed! BUT as soon as they put it to use they noticed mistakes. For example, the minifig you are supposed to get for completely a level is not the one listed in the book. And the stud amount for getting Jedi Status is also listed incorrectly. This was all in the first day of using the book, so Im guessing the mistakes are throughout. I would almost send it back, but I think it has lots of useful info too. This is our first Prima guide, so I wonder if these mistakes are common?

Whenever these come out, we buy them. They have this one, castles, Atlantis and Pirates. My kids have all of them and play for hours. I love that the instruction books are hard cover, and attached. I also love that it gives good instructions and gets the kids starting building, just as their imaginations take off, and they start designing their own creations.
I also like that these will sit in a book shelf, with a book attached to a pouch that holds the legos. This is nice for easy storage, and they just don't go into a big "lego bin".

Star Wars: Clone Troopers in Action (DK Readers, Level 2: Beginning to Read Alone) Review

Star Wars: Clone Troopers in Action (DK Readers, Level 2: Beginning to Read Alone)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Clone Troopers in Action" is a primary look at the clones. Naturally this story begins on Kamino with Jango Fett. After explaining the development of the Grand Army of the Republic, the book moves into the various theaters of combat and explores how the soldiers specialize to work in different environments. In the war named after them, the clones sometimes drive speeder bikes and even starfighters. Because the Chancellor issues Order 66, the clone army terminates most of the Jedi. Afterwards, the clone troopers are called storm troopers and then work for the Emperor to end the Galactic Civil War. They sometimes take the form of snowtroopers or scout troopers that use AT-ATs. After following an objective overview of the topic, the book takes a curious turn as it finishes with a retelling of how Luke, Leia and friends destroy the first Death Star. The story ends on a dark note as it asks, 'Will they rise again to fight the valiant rebels?' Each page contains one to four sentences of text, good for most second or third grade readers. The illustrations are mostly drawn from the films, covering the entire saga. The thirty-two page book includes a table of contents, a quiz and an index. This read is perfect for any young Star Wars fan who always wanted the full story on the clones.

The Visual Dictionary of Star Wars, Episodes IV, V, & VI: The Ultimate Guide to Star Wars Characters and Creatures Review

The Visual Dictionary of Star Wars, Episodes IV, V, and VI: The Ultimate Guide to Star Wars Characters and Creatures
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My son the nine-year-old spendthrift actually saved up for this book, and I must say it's worth every penny. It's filled with beat-up, blaster-lased equipment, cool musical instruments, weird details you've wondered about but thought you were too old to ask. When my son first got it, we fought over it!
It's also worth the money because it quickly becomes clear to the careful observer that much of the gear herein is reconditioned everyday stuff from the banal 20th Century. A musical instrument in the Cantina band, for instance, contains brass garden sprinkler nozzles! Spotting these details is what makes this book fun for us adults as well as the second generation of Jedi masters. Unreservedly recommended!

LEGO Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary Review

LEGO Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary

Very nice hardback book with lots of stunning pictures of what else? Star Wars Legos!
We are big fans of Legos in general and this book did not disappoint. It came with a bonus Luke Skywalker mini-figure. As with all DK books, you get great pictures, thorough descriptions, and just a generally enjoyable book to collect or read.
I bought 2 copies of this book, one to read, and one to collect.
The only thing that bothered me a (very tiny) little bit was how the Luke Skywalker mini-fig was packaged. At first glance it looks like a much thicker book, but about half of the thickness is a spacer placed inside the book to make room for the mini-fig, so it lays flush with the front cover. I posted some pictures on the main item page if you want to see what I mean. Nothing that I would knock a star off for though.
Overall, we are VERY happy with this book. Great price for a quality book that will not disappoint young and old!
