The Yellow Star: The Persecution of the Jews in Europe, 1933-1945 Review

The Yellow Star: The Persecution of the Jews in Europe, 1933-1945
Average Reviews:

Revised, updated, and expanded since its initial publication in 1960, and back in print in the United States after 30 years, The Yellow Star: The Persecution Of The Jews In Europe, 1933-1945 is the first photographic account of the Holocaust. The black-and-white images clearly illustrate the horror of Hitler's final solution: starvation, mass theft, mass murder. A disturbing and shocking account to page through, The Yellow Star supplements its images with plain text explaining the extent and methodology of genocide perpetrated by the Nazi regime. A sober and vital reminder of the atrocities humanity is capable of, and the need to prevent the Holocaust from happening again.

Originally published in 1960 in German as Der Gelbe Stern, this landmark book was one of the first comprehensive photographic accounts of the Holocaust. During the 1950s, researchers in Washington, D.C. and London pored over more than 1,500 tons of photographs and documents seized after World War II.In 1960 Gerhard Schoenberner gathered some 200 photographs from the newly uncovered material, most of them taken by Nazis to chronicle their war against the Jews.Schoenberner named the book after the yellow badge that the Nazis forced the persecuted Jews to wear. With its comprehensive, authoritative presentation of visual and textual evidence, much of which had not yet not been seen before, The Yellow Star shocked the German population and introduced the world to many haunting images. The book endures as one of the most important documentary accounts of the Holocaust, reprinted in many German editions and published in eight languages. The photographs are accompanied by extracts from Nazi and German documents-laws, decrees, and other Reich memoranda, field reports from SS officers and concentration camp directors, newspaper editorials, and other writings.Schoenberner also provides detailed captions to the photographs.Organized chronologically, the book follows the growing scope and terror of the Holocaust, from the first anti-Jewish laws and Kristallnacht to ghetto uprisings and the Final Solution, culminating in the liberation of the death death camps. Each chapter has a narrative introduction by the author. While remaining true to the author's original concept, this new edition is a completely fresh presentation of the photographs and documents, with several enhancements.Schoenberner has added new photographs, replaced others, updated the captions and commentary when necessary, and updated and expanded the bibliography.Even if anti-Semitism were not on the rise in today's world, The Yellow Star would still be an essential book.In photograph after photograph, page after page, the Shoah unfolds as inexorable horror-captured with resonance that remains unequaled.Praise for The Yellow Star:One of the Books of the Century.-Frankfurter Allegemeine ZeitungSince the defeat of Nazism we have seen many books on this subject, yet there are few that could be compared to this one . . . An exceptional work.-Le MondeA must for any library, and school, and household where concern and conscience are alive.-Die Welt

The LEGO Book Review

The LEGO Book
Average Reviews:

I pre-ordered this set for my 12 yr old son. I received it yesterday and I must say I am quite pleased with the set. I found myself thoroughly enjoying the colorful pages and skimming over all the mini figures and sets that have evolved over the decades. Viewing the pages provided a bit of nostalgia for me as I was able to share my own memories with my son. This set is great for the Lego Collector or enthusiast. I really enjoyed the overview of the history of Lego along with the timelines and descriptions of manufacturing, etc.
If you are looking for "building tips" or "an idea book" this is not the book for you, instead I would look into the purchase of: "The Unofficial Lego Builder's Guide" by Allan Bedford, or the DK Lego Modelers series that have booklets containing ways to create characters using common lego pieces that you may already have in your collection.

A Queen's Diary (DK READERS) Review

A Queen's Diary (DK READERS)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The release of Star Wars books for young people has always been related to a theatrical promotion. In a world that has a seen all six films, a new wave of DK Readers is much appreciated. It gives us comfort that even though the movies are finished, the Star Wars experience isn't completely 'done.' As the title suggests, "A Queen's Diary" looks into the life of Queen Amidala of the Naboo. In the beginning of her diary, Amidala discusses what it's like to be queen. We get to find out who she is as a person as she describes how she feels about her position. Eventually, the book discusses the time when the Trade Federation invaded her planet. Queen Amidala met some Jedi and a boy named Anakin Skywalker. Eventually, she and her people are victorious. The diary ends by the Queen wondering if she'll ever see that Anakin boy again. As with many of these books, Padmé Amidala is the token Star Wars character for girls. As in "Queen in Disguise," she is a humble heroine. Despite depicting a great role model for girls, this title is not 'girly.' The feminine dynamics simply add some balance to the usual testosterone that should make this appeal to both the guys and gals. "A Queen's Diary" offers some redundancy in the Star Wars pantheon. It is remarkably similar to 2000's "I Am a Queen." It also has overlap with Queen Amidala's "Episode I: Journal." Despite such overlapping, it is forgivable when considering that the other books mentioned are all out-of-print. This book keeps the Queen's story alive for a younger generation of readers. In terms of the illustrations, the vast majority were lifted from "the Phantom Menace." While the pictures are high quality, the writing is also good. This new series has books for most levels of elementary readers. Given the length and vocabulary, this title is best suited to readers on a third grade level. "A Queen's Diary" offers a personal look at Padmé Amidala during Episode I.

Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (Mighty Chronicles) Review

Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (Mighty Chronicles)
Average Reviews:

This book is not meant to be a complete account of the story. It is an abbreviated version meant for a quick read to get a gist of the storyline. Taking that into perspective, it is a good book to get if you are a Star Wars fan. However, if you expect a complete chronicle of the story, then you will be sorely dissapointed, like the last reviewer was. It is meant to be a collectible to be put on a shelf with the other abbreviated version of the other movies.

Star Wars: The Mystery of the Rebellious Robot Review

Star Wars: The Mystery of the Rebellious Robot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the pantheon of Star Wars literature, "The Mystery of the Rebellious Robot" is one of the first expanded universe stories, going all the way back to 1979. In this story, R2-D2 malfunctions and nearly destroys the Millennium Falcon. Before long, many of the Rebel Alliance's droids are also malfunctioning. These robot related dangers spark the mystery of the rebellious robot(s). Mark Corcoran's illustrations have that rainbow hue that was so common in popular images during the late 70's and early 80's. In this respect, the book has a charming vintage quality. Given the text, the book is best for children on a third grade reading level. The book will be a fun read for children, but the book predates any effort to align the expanded universe with the films. For example, Luke Skywalker is able to take control and land the Millennium Falcon with his Jedi powers long before receiving Yoda's training. A cornerstone of the plot is that the rebellion against the Empire is put on hold to initiate a United Nations style relief effort to hydrate Tatooine. The title is misleading as there are no rebellious robots; 'rebellious' is misused as a synonym for 'damaged.' At one point, Chewie and R2-D2 actually play 'planetary poker' and Artoo gets four aces. There is one guiltless expanded universe element. In "A New Hope," Luke and Han get medals for destroying the Death Star, but Chewbacca gets left in the cold. In "The Mystery of the Rebellious Robot," Chewie finally gets a medal! Such inconsistencies, silliness and sloppiness may make the skin of crawl of Star Wars geeks. Despite continuity issues, the intended audience will just find it all to be good fun.

...Its a great kids book, even I enjoy reading it and listening to it as well. Its short with great pictures from the movie. The only thing that disagreed with me was the voices of the characters they used. They sound close, but they sure don't measure up to the real thing!

Queen Amidala (Star Wars Episode 1, Journal #2) Review

Queen Amidala (Star Wars Episode 1, Journal #2)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I remember the magic of the original Star Wars (I was 11 at the time), and I've been rather dismayed at the huge marketing campaign around the Phantom Menace. I picked up this book expecting it to be as trashy as a Taco Bell toy. Much to my surprise, it actually conveys significant insights into Queen Amidala/Padme which did not come out in the movie, nor in Terry Brooks' novelization. The author did a good job of imitating the style of a 14-year-old girl, but beneath the prosaic writing you feel that there's a real person, one whom you can admire and sympathize with. Only two complaints -- it's too short, and the pictures are too repetitive. Surely with more than two hours of film, they could have found a few different shots of Amidala/Padme.

Star Wars Episode I: I Am a Jedi (A Random House Star Wars Storybook with Foil Stickers) Review

Star Wars Episode I: I Am a Jedi (A Random House Star Wars Storybook with Foil Stickers)
Average Reviews:

As a special education teacher working to stimulate children with reading differences/difficulties, I am always looking for highly motivating, well-illustrated, well-written books. This book is all three, plus it has the advantage of appealing, in its subject material, not just to the younger readers (grades 1-4), but to those in grades 5-12 (yes, 12!) as well. I was able to do many interesting activities for boys and girls with learning differences, using materials based on Episodes 4, 5, and 6. So far, the story/activity books from Episode I, including this one and the three others in the four-book series, are just as carefully done, with the same potential for entrancing and motivating the low-level reader. (And I, a high-level reader, also think they are simply super for reading to great-grandchildren or to myself.) The Star Wars materials, this story in particular, offer many opportunities to develop high-level critical thinking skills, which these students usually have in abundance, and to stimulate writing and vocabulary skills. Even a short book like this one offers the opportunity to discuss acceptable behaviors, to improve choice-making, and to define personal goals. Thank you, George Lucas, Marc Cerasini and Random House, for making solid-gold books like this available!

Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi Photo Comic Review

Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi Photo Comic
Average Reviews:

This Star Wars book was well done in it's premise of a photo comic book. The pictures were clear and not fuzzy, and the wording was pretty accurate to the movie. $9.00 I think is a bit high for the price of it but considering the ink and paper that it's made on it's worth the price.
It is an easy book for kids to read with out all the descriptions that go into a paperback book.
I am buying the other two in the series. The Empire Strikes Back and STar Wars:A New Hope.

The Death of Hope (Star Wars: Jedi Apprentice, Book 15)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I really enjoyed the book one of the best! I love how Obi-Wan had to be the jedi "Master" though most of it.It showed that Qui-Gon is not perfect and that he needs Obi-Wan. The ending was sad. I don't think that Qui-Gon was so bad to Obi-Wan he did worry about his padawan. I think it would have be better for Qui to tell Obi about his feelings for tahl it would have helped obi understand why Qui was acting the way he did. I think its sweet that they both loved tahl(in different ways).I feel sorry for Bant How is she going to feel? She hardly knows the real Tahl.I really hoped that we could have seen Tahl on the cover so that we know what see looks like.

The Fight for Justice by Luke Skywalker (Star Wars Journal) Review

The Fight for Justice by Luke Skywalker (Star Wars Journal)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read this book one day when I was grounded and it was so sitting-on-the-edge-of-my-seat, rivetingly good that I didn't want to come out! It is written in journal form about what Luke was thinking and feeling during A New Hope, though this book spans a little before it too. This was especially interesting for me, since Luke has always been my favorite character. Part of why I loved it is that it was not simply yet another retelling of the original story, but breathed new life into it, and made it even more interesting, and considering that I have seen this movie so many times I practicly have it memerized, that is quite a feat. My one complaint of this book was that, though the character of Luke was explored deeply and in ways that few other books have, all the other characters were pretty much left out with the exception of Leia, since Luke was thinking quite a lot about her at this time. But then again, when I write in my journal I usually don't focus on other people either, and since this is supposed to be Luke's journal, that does make sense. In short, this was a wonderfull book that I would reccamend to any Star Wars fan, especially those who love Luke.

Star Wars Episode 1 : The Phantom Menace Movie Storybook Review

Star Wars Episode 1 : The Phantom Menace Movie Storybook
Average Reviews:

First off, I thought the flick was pretty good, though a little too slow in the middle. It needed more action, more depth, less clumsy dialogue, and less kiddie stuff. We all know that now. Okay. With that in mind, the screenplay is great in some parts, and groan out loud bad in others. If you're one of the more forgiving (and less bandwagon-jumping obsessed) hardcore fans, it's a treasure. Even with all it's faults, it's cool to sit down and read how the pieces begin to fall into place. Also, this is an uncut script, so a lot of the deleted stuff you see on the DVD is in here, as is some cut dialogue. Again, I wouldn't advise this for the passive Star Wars fan, but it is a must-have for the REAL (being a relative term, of course) Star Wars fan.
