Star Wars -- A Musical Journey: Music from Episodes I - VI (Big Note Piano) Review

This review may hold true for all the "Big Note Piano" songbooks put out by Alfred Publishing as we've loved them all. It's perfect for my Late Beginner students and my 10-yr. old son who transports himself to another world when playing these arrangements. It's challenging enough as it offers lots of practice with different hand positions, keys, accidentals, eighth notes, meter, chords and intervals (just about every aspect of music). But simple enough that the pianist doesn't get frustrated. At the same time, it's mostly familiar music of favorite movies and songs, which offers motivation for the pianist. Even as an accomplished pianist and teacher, I LOVE playing from them!
Alfred Publishing needs to put out MORE "Big Note Piano" songbooks for kids!!! We currently also own "Harry Potter: Magical Music from the First Five Years and "The Polar Express". Would love to see "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Tangled" (along with more recent Disney hits), as well as more recent cartoon theme songs.

As a teacher of over 15 years I am always looking for modern and popular songs for my male students. Finding beginner level music can be a challenge. This book was great as it had a good collection of songs form Star Wars and accompanying duets. I have used several with students that have taken about 4-6 months of lessons.

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (Piano Solos) Review

Film composer extraordinaire John Williams closes out the Star Wars saga on a good note (no pun intended). Those who currently own other Star Wars sheet music will notice that this book includes previously published pieces such as "The Force Theme" and "End Title/Credits". However, the hauntingly sorrowful "Anakin's Dark Deeds" and the fast paced Maestoso "Battle of the Heroes" in orchestration take the viewer on an emotional roller coaster that has "Duel of the Fates" like intensity. This book, written for piano solo, is a farily accurate representation of the soundtrack. However, you will find that some of the pieces are not in their original key and require tranposition to be played along with the soundtrack. For a fan of John Williams or Star Wars, this is a book worth having in your collection.

Obviously, kids like this music. Dan Coates does a really great job of arranging the sometimes complex music of John Williams so that it can be played by kids, but sounds sophisticated. There is also a range of difficulty of the pieces contained in this book. The "Star Wars Main Theme," and the "Imperial March" are fairly easy and straight forward. "May the Force Be With You" and "Cantina Band" are somewhat more difficult. I would say that if your kid is at the level 2A-B, he (she) would be able to stretch a bit and play the easier selections. The harder selections could be approached by level 3A-B students, although my son was able to master some of the harder arrangements (with considerable practice) coming from level 2B, and improved his musicality accordingly. Thus, children will be able to go back to this book time and time again as their ability increases. The Coates Star Wars arrangements must be popular at recitals as attested to by the large number of videos of these pieces on You Tube.
