Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Volume 9 - Demon Review

Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Volume 9 - Demon

Something I really like about this comic series is that stories DO come to an end, from time to time! And start back all over again. This is another example. Those of you who regularly follow this series will enjoy the few surprises that are revealed in these issues... everything is rather different from what you have imagined, guys! The rest will understand nothing, until they bought the previous issues. And all, at the end, will get that rare feeling of inner satisfaction that comes from the fact that, if you do not want to, you really DO NOT HAVE to buy another 30 issues for the next couple of years to know how the story will end! The art is generally very good, although not exeptional. Do not buy if you haven't previously read vol. 7 and 8!

Cold Wars (Star Trek New Frontier: Gateways, Book 6) Review

Cold Wars (Star Trek New Frontier: Gateways, Book 6)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Peter Davids latest New Frontier Cold Wars is his best effort to date. This book finds our heros Calhoun and Shelby going to thallonian space to investigate Iconian gateway activity. On the way they get sidetracked to two planets whom have been at war with each other forever and are now using gateway technology to once again start the war back up. Shelby's new ship the Trident is a galaxy class ship. We meet two of her new crew members right off. Arex and M'Ress from TOS anamated have joined the crew after separate temporal incidents. Another new crew member is Lt Cmdr Gleau a Selelvian who is the science officer on Shelby's ship. Calhoun's new 1st officer is someone you will never suspect. The story is fast paced and the book impossible to put down. Character development is great. Selar has some good moments such as when Moke ask her to be his mother. Burgy and Selar have some good moments also. And there is something for the fans of Calhoun and Shelby. Shelby and Mueller have several good scenes one which is very amusing when they discuss Calhoun. This book has a nice polished feel to it that was sadly lacking in the last outing Restoration. I highly recommend this book for all Star Trek fans and especailly for New Frontier fans

Scattered throughout the galaxy are Gateways which link star systems across unfathomable distances. The technology that built them has been lost for tens of millennia...but that doesn't mean that it can't be found again. Missing for two hundred millennia, the legendary Iconians have returned, bringing with them the secret of interdimensional teleportatin across vast interstellar distances. Awakened once more, their ancient Gateways are rewriting the map of the galaxy, and nowhere more than in the New Frontier...A century ago, the imperial Thallonians separated two feuding alien races, depositing each of them on a new world safely distant from that of their ancestral enemies. Now, however, the Gateways have made it possible for the long dormant blood feud to begin anew. Captain Mackenzie Calhoun of the U.S.S. Excalibur and his partner, Captain Elizabeth Shelby of the U.S.S. Trident, find themselves fighting a losing battle to keep the horrific violence from escalating, even as they gradually realise the catastrophic danger posed by the Gateways themselves!

Ambush at Corellia (Star Wars, The Corellian Trilogy #1) (Book 1) Review

Ambush at Corellia (Star Wars, The Corellian Trilogy #1) (Book 1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The cover of the book tells you that this is book one of the Corellian Trilogy. Therefore, anyone who has ever read a trilogy (much less one of the several Star Wars novel trilogies) should know exactly what to expect: lots of character development, a slowly building plot, and no resolution whatsoever. That having been said, this book actually does a great job of living up to those criteria.
Let's face it, the writing in this one is not that great. However, it's definitely worth reading. For one, Han is the central character, an automatic plus. Second, we get to see some scene's with Han and Leia's children (what a novel idea!) and some sense of the "Solo family." And we get a very in-depth look at Corellia, too, a planet often referred to but rarely, if ever, seen. All things said, it' a pretty neat book, just not a really great one.
The best thing about it is that it's not about the Empire. I get rather tired of the Comeback Kings surfacing over and over again. Sure, this trilogy may not be of the same sweeping scale as the films or even Zahn's trilogy, but that only serves to work in its favor. It's different, which is something the universe of Star Wars novels needs more of. (Frankly, I don't really see NJO as the saving grace everyone labels it as; the Yuzhan Vong are just the Empire in disguise if you ask me). Read this book folks. It ain't great, but it is fun. Besides, it's a necessary opening chapter to the trilogy, which does get better.

A trade summit on Corellia brings Han Solo back to the home world he left many years before. Arriving on the distant planet with Leia, their children and Chewbacca, Han finds Corellia overrun with agents of the New Republic Intelligence and finds himself part of a deceptive plan whose aim not even he understands. One thing is clear: the five inhabited worlds of the sector are on the brink of civil war and the once peaceful coexistence of the three leading races -- human, Selonian, and Drallan -- has come to an end.

The Dark Side Sourcebook (Star Wars Roleplaying Game) Review

The Dark Side Sourcebook (Star Wars Roleplaying Game)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Star Wars RPG, even in the hands of West End Games, never ventured to the Dark Side. As far as we can tell, Lucasfilm never wanted to detail material on playing the darker side of the Force in campaigns since they feel Star Wars is a story about good overcoming evil.
Of course, if you are an avid Star Wars roleplayer, you've probably just ventured out onto your own. Now, you have official material that draws together quite a bit of EU books and comics and gives you a solid reference on the history and power of the Dark Side. As a book that summarizes the history of the Sith and the what we know about the villains of the books and movies (so far), it succeeds.
So why not five stars? This book is a double edged sword. The rewrite of Darth Vader's stats continues to illustrate the problems with the armor rules (see my review of the Core Rules for more info here). Dark Side character concepts are presented as Prestige Classes. However, some of the prestige classes have so little requirements that they are practically base classes.
Where else does the book succeed? There is an excellent chapter that is written as an antithesis to the chapter on The Force in the Core Rules. Written in identical style and format, the book intriduces you to the Dark Side's seductive and controlling power. It's a good read for GM's who need to portray this to PCs in their group that are wobbling on the edge.
Depending on your taste for EU, you may appreciate or not appreciate the powerful Dark Side equipment that is more than a match for the game mechanics of the Jedi. Sure, some GM's were looking for a game mechanic based challenge for their Jedi, but others (like myself) felt the constant challenge of tempering the Force with the Jedi Code was difficult enough to roleplay.
Nearly every Star Wars GM will love some parts of this book, and dislike others. That's because covering the Dark Side fully, by necessity, means covering the EU as well. Your own personal taste will come into play when deciding what rules to adopt, and what to leave out. But that's okay, it's a normal part of roleplaying. This one is a good buy.

LEGO Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary Library Edition Review

LEGO Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary Library Edition
Average Reviews:

We ordered this for my Son's school, at the same time as we ordered the hardback version (LEGO Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary) for ourselves. They look to be identical except that this one does not include the mini-fig. As a result it also doesn't have the 1/4 inch spacer mat inside the front cover.
As for content, there are a few pages at the front that are a listing of all the lego star wars sets. After that the pages are much like the normal The Visual Dictionary of Star Wars, Episodes IV, V, & VI: The Ultimate Guide to Star Wars Characters and Creatures, except with close up pictures of legos, rather than movie stills.
