Galaxy Guide 4: Alien Races (Star Wars Roleplaying Game Supplement) Review

A true must-have for those tired of playing Human characters in an Universe as diversed as Star Wars. It is specialy good in giving written explanations for the Attribute Stats, from all the SW books I've read, this, like none other, gives insighful explanations to the alien's species.

Imperial Sourcebook (Star Wars RPG) Review

Imperial Sourcebook (Star Wars RPG)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This has a lot of detailed information on the imperial government, however the military aspects are lacking. If you want simple information such as the statistics of a TIE-Bomber or a how many squadrons and troops a Star Destroyer carries, you won't find that information here. Worse yet, the order of battle diagrams that take up several pages appear to use symbols that weren't included on the key. At best, it's a good look at the Empire from a broad perspective. At worst, it's vague and unhelpful.
This is also the older edition of the book. If you want the latest edition, you should look at the hard cover, ISBN 0-87431-210-8.

Galaxy Guide 9: Fragments From the Rim (Star Wars Roleplaying Game) Review

Galaxy Guide 9: Fragments From the Rim (Star Wars Roleplaying Game)
Average Reviews:

Usually when you find a gem of a book like this one, it's valuable for one of two reasons. It either provides you with necessary stats for equipment, NPCs, vehicles, etc., or it provides well written backgrounds and galaxy information to use as a backdrop for your adventures. This is the latter. You will not find the biggest and the best equipment, but reading this book is bound to give gamemasters adventure material and ideas for story hooks. It covers the basics of corporate personalities, Rebels, Imperials, swoop gangs, mercenary groups and more. There isn't much that you can just transplant into a game, and there are no stand alone adventures in the book, but considering that you can often find the book for $7.00 or less (in used condition), there is no reason why a gamemaster shouldn't own the book.

Power of the Jedi Sourcebook (Star Wars Roleplaying Game) Review

Power of the Jedi Sourcebook (Star Wars Roleplaying Game)

The Power of the Jedi Sourcebook is a full-color, hardcover resource for all things pertaining to the Jedi Order. Continuing from the standard set by the Dark Side Sourcebook, the "PotJ" book combines information and utility with a tasteful arrangement of interior artwork and photos.
Most players will probably be most interested in the selection of new Jedi Prestige Classes, Light Side Force skills, feats, and equipment that the book offers. But there are also sections discussing Jedi history, Jedi traditions, new equipment, and new force-sensitive creatures. There are entries on important characters, important locations, and even advice on how to run a Jedi campaign. And of course, no book on the Jedi would be complete without a discussion of Force Spirits. This is also a section discussing new races, but most of these are also in the newer Ultimate Alien Anthology.
This book has been one of the important resources in my Star Wars campaign. I've really enjoyed using the Prestige Classes. From the Jedi Healer to the powerful Jedi Weapon Master, players now have a much wider range of advancement options open to their characters. In addition many of the force-sensitive characters, creatures, and locations have already popped up in my storyline. I also found the notes on running a Jedi campaign to be very useful, for not only can they guide a GM but they can also aid players on how a Jedi should conduct himself.
However, I do have a few minor complaints. A few of the Light Side force skills, particularly Force Light and Sever Force, seem to be quite powerful. Perhaps this is because they were based on the abilities of comic-book characters, but in any case, it was a wise move that such skills may only be acquired with GM approval. I would have also preferred to see a much more in-depth history section, particularly as it pertains to the Tales of the Jedi storyline. Finally, I felt that the maps for some of the important locations were fairly inadequate.
However, as I noted earlier, these were minor complaints.
Overall, I found this to be an outstanding addition to my Star Wars campaign. I use it often, and it is likely that I will continue to do so for some time to come. Whether you're the GM of a campaign with Jedi in it, or whether you're a player wanting to explore the possibilities of a Jedi character, I'd recommend this book as a solid investment.

Revised Core Rulebook (Star Wars Roleplaying Game) Review

Revised Core Rulebook (Star Wars Roleplaying Game)
Average Reviews:

I played the old West End Games version of the Star Wars RPG for 12 years, and have been looking forward to this new version for some time. I'm happy to report that, in most respects, WotC has really delivered.
The d20 rules (similar, but not identical to the 3rd Edition D&D rules) are elegant in their simplicity. I think that this will help the new game overcome one of the few shortcomings of the excellent WEG system -- combat (and skill resolution as a whole) could be extremely slow with experienced characters, as the players would have to roll and then count up huge handfuls of d6s.
There are not a large number of character classes available in the new system, especially compared to the plethora of templates available under WEG. However, the multiclassing rules are very simple, and can help re-create many of the old templates.
I only have two complaints about this otherwise excellent new game. First of all, the starship combat system is extremely simplistic and abstract -- a little too much so for my tastes. Secondly, while the book contains statistics for many aliens and equipment, there are a lot of staples that are still missing (where are banthas, A-wings, or TIE Interceptors?).
One final note -- there isn't a lot of help for true novice role-players in this rulebook. If you love Star Wars, but have never tried a role-playing game before, you might want to try the introductory "Star Wars Adventure Game" first.
