Star Wars-Crimson Empire: Council of Blood, Volume 2 Review

Star Wars-Crimson Empire: Council of Blood, Volume 2

While the first Crimson Empire tale was very good and effective, this one fails in many areas.
The main problem with this issues is that they had so many subplots and characters, it was like they were trying to compress a thick novel into a comic book series. There was so much going on they couldn't focus enough on any one theme and develop it.
Also, as much as I didn't like Sinn, heroic rebel commander, being portrayed as a complete slut in the first one, I hate it even worse when they change how a character looks from one comic to another, in the same way that it annoys me when different actors play the same character in different movies.
This book did have pretty good renditions of ships, and it was cool how they introduced mysterious Nom Anor, one of the main baddies in the New Jedi Order series. Unfortunately, although the ship and landscape art was mostly very well done, the people were badly rendered and disproportianate. The Hutt was tiny sometimes, normal sized at others, Sinn's face was a complete disaster, none of the carry-overs from the first issue looked right, and most of the time the faces were just too thick and disgusting.
Another thing, the alien races on the Imp Council! Not only were several of those species known to be sided with the New Republic, plus the fact that the Empire is all anti-aliens, makes this not work. Plus several of those species are so obscure I'm not sure why'd they'd have a member on the council. Oh well.
Still, I am definitely looking forward to CE III, as it is going to tie in pretty heavily to NJO...
If you really love Star Wars, buy this one, but if you're just a moderate fan, I'd recommend skipping it over.

Top notch story and artwork from Byrne, it fits together in many & surprising ways with a few different episodes of The Original Series... If you're a Trek fan, or a Byrne fan, you've got quite a find here. There were some sweet surprises, and overall, I felt it was his best work I'd seen in a long while. Top recommendation.

Star Wars Chronicles: The Prequels Review

Star Wars Chronicles: The Prequels
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Even if you are not a fan of the Prequels, this book will simply blow your mind with its unbelievable wealth of photographs and reference material, most of which have never before been revealed by Lucasfilm until now. The presentation is truly epic with an exquisitely designed high-gloss black slipcase die-cut to accentuate the facial features of Vader's mask. Pull the hardbound archival tome out of its protective slipcase to reveal the grayscale visage of Young Anakin Skywalker behind the mask. Thus begins your unfathomable journey into the fantastic and creative worlds of the Star Wars Prequels containing hundreds upon hundreds of rare production photos, fold-out comparison charts, production designs and illustrations chronicling the creation of an entire galaxy of characters, costumes, ships, weapons and worlds from conception to execution. If you thought the Star Wars Visual Dictionaries from DK publishing were impressive, you have not even gotten your feet wet. This tome simply makes all others look amateurish by comparison and I dare say it is even more informative and comprehensive than the Original Trilogy Chronicles book that preceded it. This is THE definitive Star Wars Prequel encyclopedia nearly a decade in the making and should be in the possession of every single die-hard Star Wars fan. To reveal any more details would spoil the surprise of the rich treasure trove of information waiting to be plundered within the lush pages of its hardbound spine. Star Wars Chronicles: The Prequels is a veritable Holocron of knowledge extracted from the Jedi Archives itself! What are you waiting for? You owe it to yourself. It is your destiny.

Star Wars: Return of the Jedi: Special Edition (Star Wars (Dark Horse)) Review

Star Wars: Return of the Jedi: Special Edition (Star Wars (Dark Horse))

The comic book adaptation of Return of the Jedi does a good job of describing the events that take place in the movie. The sketches drawn show enough detail to give them depth. Found at the back of the book are production sketches from the original trilogy by Ralph McQuarrie, Ivor Beddoes, Joe Johnston, Derek Thompson, George Hull, Doug Chiang, and Terryl Whitlatch including an early concept design of a stormtrooper. I prefer the version that is in the movies. Also included were sketches of the Special Edition of ROTJ including the celebration scenes at the end of the movie.

Star Wars Miniatures Ultimate Missions: Rebel Storm: A Star Wars Miniatures Game Product (Star Wars Miniatures Product) Review

Star Wars Miniatures Ultimate Missions: Rebel Storm: A Star Wars Miniatures Game Product (Star Wars Miniatures Product)

A first look at the book and it's pretty spectacular; you've got full color, new art, and nearly 100 pages of missions. There's a full color map and a tile with terrain pieces, which is unfortunately the most useful item in the book.
My main complaint has nothing to do with play testing, proofreading, or editing about which many people have already complained. The problem that I have is that the missions are uninspiring. I don't really have a desire to sit down and play through three-fourths of a book that just mimics the original Star Wars trilogy. The missions that are outside the scope of the movies hold a bit more interest, but in the end it just isn't enough.
The best part of the book (other than the appearance) is the random scenario generator that makes up only the last few pages of the book. The other plus is the map and tiles, of which I certainly have use in a role-playing game setting. (There have been some complaints on the message boards of game balance issues with the map, but I haven't played enough with the map to say that.)
I would have much rather had this product be a set of tiles, 3 or 4 new double sided maps, and a 16 page random scenario booklet.

Even thought I loved the contents of this book I couldn't give it four stars. Why, because of the bad binding job! The information and pictures in this book I found informative but it spoils the enjoyment when the pages keep falling out. I only just brought this book too! Oh, and just so you know the Star Wars Scrapbook is bound the same way!

The Threat Within (Star Wars: Jedi Apprentice, Book 18) Review

The Threat Within (Star Wars: Jedi Apprentice, Book 18)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, I really enjoyed this book. Sure, at times the writing style was a little bland and the supporting characters a bit formulaic, but for me, the amount of emotional development in the main characters of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, and the quickly moving, descriptive plot completely made up for it. Many found this book in particular too reminiscent of earlier ones, particularly the whole Melida/Daan disaster. But I thought that having Obi-Wan reflect back on the horrors he saw there, and the huge rift between himself and Qui-Gon back then, made the similarities haunting rather than tedious, and added a heightened sense of drama to the overall story. It also showed how much Obi-Wan's matured over the past few years, in his willingness to never let anything like that happen again. Anyway, in this book Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are sent on a mission to Vorzyd 4, a planet on the edge of war with it's neighbor, Vorzyd 5, whom they are certain are the culprits of the resent terrorist attacks on their cities. As soon as they get there however, it's clear that everything is not as it seems... At the same time, Qui-Gon is beginning to become aware of the fact that Obi-Wan is growing up, and that the time they have left together is short, and this pains him terribly. Anyway, this is definitely a must for those of you who've been following the series. There is one more book after this, another split "special edition" adventure that features first Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, and then later Obi-Wan and a young Anakin. Here's to that one being even better!
