Remnant: Force Heretic I (Star Wars: The New Jedi Order) Review

Remnant: Force Heretic I (Star Wars: The New Jedi Order)

This was the first of the NJO series that I just couldn't finish. I kept putting the book down. The authors couldn't keep my attention. I guess I'll have to force myself to re-read it, if I'm going to endure their next books. Maybe this would have been better if only one author had worked on it, rather than the tag team of Williams and Dix.
I noticed there were some parts that I really enjoyed, like the story about the slave transport in the prologue, and the Imperial Remnant. There were other parts, like the story about Nom Anor and the Shamed that weren't very interesting, nor were they plausible. I just wish they were able to write the rest of the book with as much passion as they put into the prologue. Maybe this reflects the strength or weakness of the authors? Perhaps they each wrote different parts of the book, rather than collaborating on the entire novel?
I bought the book based on the teaser about Luke and Mara searching for Zonama Sekot. I wish I had opened to the last page to read that, even at the end of the book, Luke has not found the "force" planet. You get to read the next one or two or ten books to find out what happens.
Argh! I've followed the NJO series from the beginning. I don't mind waiting, but this is a new low. If you're going to tease us like this, at least let him find the planet, even if it takes another book to flesh out the story. I realize that maybe this isn't the author's fault. Perhaps I should get mad at the editor or publisher. Still, after 400 pages you expect that some part of the teaser will be resolved!!
I can understand stretching out the Vong story for 10 or 15 books, although my patience is starting to wear thin. However, trying to write 2-3 books about the subplot of Luke and the force planet, or Nom Anor and the Shamed Ones just won't work. There just isn't enough there to keep you entertained.
If the original trilogy had been done like this, "Star Wars: A New Hope" would have been written as a series of 10 books... the back cover would have a teaser about the destruction of the Death Star, and the last page would end with "Luke Skywalker turned off his targetting computer and trusted in the Force. Would he be able to destroy the Death Star? Whatever it took, he was going to do it. THE END"

Alliance (Star Wars: Legacy, Vol. 4) Review

Alliance (Star Wars: Legacy, Vol. 4)

I'll admit it. I wasn't a huge fan of Legacy #1. Cade Skywalker was, well, underwhelming, but for whatever reason, I recently bought Legacy #2, After reading #2, I went out and snatched up #3 and #4. I found #4 was exciting and, like certain books in the NJO and LotF series, I was struck by some poignant moments that recalled the desperate heroism that marked the fall of such types as Chewbacca or Ganner Rhysode. This is definitely one of my new favorites, and even after finishing it, I found myself flipping back to the beginning to start again... a sure winner!

Star Wars: The Truce at Bakura Review

Star Wars: The Truce at Bakura
Average Reviews:

Truce at Bakura is a riveting action packed tale of the days directly after Return of the Jedi. Luke injured by the Emperor during the final battle aboard the Death Star II, is receiving treatment for those life threatening electrical convulsions you see him go through, when he receives a visitation from the spirit of Obi-Wan Kenobi bidding him to go to Bakura which is in great danger. So Luke in command of a task force with diplomats Han and Leia in tow heads out to Bakura. It was interesting to see Luke Skywalker in command of a military force, something not seen in any of the other Star Wars books. At Bakura our heroes find Imperial forces about to be destroyed by soul sucking aliens. In the interests of the innocents enemies join force and the fun begins. The battles both on land and in space are well written and the story is great. Love, death, betrayel, everything a Star Wars reader could possibly want is here. Han's gloating over the defeat of the Empire at Endor in front of Bakura's Imperial governor is classic, Leia's confrontation with the spirit of Anakin Skywalker is an imporatant aspect to the story, while Luke's romantic feelings for a lovely Bakuran senator are a humanizing influence on a character to often viewed as above human emotions. Overall Truce at Bakura is a great read, well written and I highly recommend it.

Star Wars: Legacy Volume 8 - Tatooine Review

Star Wars: Legacy Volume 8 - Tatooine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start by saying I really like the Legacy series. I think writer John Ostrander has done an incredible job of creating the next chapter of the Star Wars universe and populating it with memorable characters.
But with this volume I really worry he has stalled out. Up until now it's seemed that the story was moving forward, characters were developing, the war between the Alliance and the Sith Empire was shifting.
But after eight volumes of story, after his time as a Jedi Knight and a Sith Apprentice, our main character Cade Skywalker is back to being a pirate, back to being a bounty hunter, and back to having arguements with the ghost of Luke Skywalker. It seems we've traveled a long way to go no where.
This book reprints Star Wars Legacy up to issue 41. It's been confirmed that the series will end with issue 50. I really hope the series will have a conclusion rather than spin it's wheels for another book or two. I'll probably pick up the last volumes but I'm losing enthusiasm.

Solo Command (Star Wars, X-Wing #7) (Book 7) Review

Solo Command (Star Wars, X-Wing #7) (Book 7)
Average Reviews:

1. The Rogues are back with more to do. Corran Horn, Tal'Dira, and Iniryi Forge have quite a bit of stuff here. Forge's one chapter seems to give more dialogue than Stackpole ever gave her after WEdge's Gamble.
(Man, this keyboard is messed up. Any mistakes are probably because of the keyboard. Keys are sticking all over the place.)
2. The humor is still great. Wedge' mutiny and his revenge on Jansen are terrific. Elassar Targon seems to fit in well withthe Wraiths, except for Runt of course.
3. Awww, Wedge is back with Iella, I guess. Sort of. She's mentioned in one scene. Anyway, they are back together.
4. Han Solo is dead on with character. Great job, Allston.
5. Great Drama marks this book. The scene where Face accidently makes a revalation over an open comm channel is great. Wraiths in the oven, also good. Wedge and Baron Fel played out great too.
6. Deaths. Allston has backed the body count down a notch or two but the deaths of characters are appreciated. Two relatively minor characters are dispatched in various battles but the way one of them dies is particularly chilling.
7. About time we had assasins in the SW universe. The attacks on the political and military officials were very nicely done.
8. Opening. Allston has the best opening paragraphs of any SW EU author IMHO. He started off Iron Fist with a bang and he matches it here. Twelve minutes to live. Wow!!
One minor quibble:
It got a little old having Solo jump in and pound at Zsinj and then having him jump out and Solo slumps his shoulders in despair. Redundancy and predictability are the name of the game in these slugging mathces.
Gotta go. I'd stay longer but someone just came in to tell me that the Rancors are stealing my top hats. I've got to put a stop to that. See ya.

The New Essential Chronology to Star Wars Review

The New Essential Chronology to Star Wars
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is problably the most complete guide ever made. Has entire sections of time not discussed in movies (The Golden Age of the Sith, The New Jedi Order, etc.). Also includes many little-known Clone Wars battles that are very interesting (The Dark Reaper Project, Battle of Kamino, Defense of Naboo, The Battles of Lianna and Tehr, Fortress of Axion, Muunilnist, Brentaal,Null, Haruun Kal, the list goes on). Goes from up to 100,000 years before battle of Yavin to 36 years after. Also, the art is wonderfully done by Tommy Lee Edwards and the portraits look like pictures by Mark Chiarello. Just an excellent book that I'll problably read about 50 times or so. Definitely, a MUST buy (and well worth the cover price too.)
