Geisha, Harlot, Strangler, Star: A Woman, Sex, and Morality in Modern Japan (Asia Perspectives: History, Society, and Culture) Review

Geisha, Harlot, Strangler, Star: A Woman, Sex, and Morality in Modern Japan (Asia Perspectives: History, Society, and Culture)

Once you get over reading the name "Abe Sada" as though it were "Abe Lincoln," you'll have a whale of a time reading Dr. Johnston's account of a famous modern Japanese geisha and killer. He is a professor at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, but don't let his distinguished credentials put you off, he is also a tip top storyteller. Many of us in the West heard about this case first from the shocking "art film" directed by Oshima called, IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES, and many guys who saw this movie back in the day will still not uncross their legs.
Johnston has won access to the original testimony and court transcriptions of Sada's arrest and trial. He quotes from memoirs of Sada provided by the man who interrogated her directly after the crime. "What really left an impression," said Adachi Umezo, "was when I asked her, 'Why did you cut him?' Immediately she became excited and her eyes sparkled in a strange way. At the time people were saying thaat she had cut off Ishida's thing because it was larger than average. But in reality, Ishida's was just average." Johnston asks the question, how did Udezo know rhat Ishida's penis was just average. Who can say, but as Johnston proves, Udezo must have seen a lot of men's genitals to make such a judgement.
As an appendix, the historian wins out over the storyteller, and Johnston's narrative voice slips discreetly away and we hear Abe Sada's own account of what happened, the way she saw it. For the first time, we see the whole murder slash castration story from the point of view of the woman who committed it, and we see that a society, like pre-war Japan, that had driven women to the point of insanity, their backs against the wall, monitored and legislated through rape and coerced brothel activity, might expect plenty more from any woman brave enough to strike back. If Abe Sada was a star, as Johnston foregrounds in his title, she became a star in much the same way that Valerie Solanas did, for political and economic reasons, however badly understood by both perpetrator and victim.

Star Wars: We Don't Do Weddings (Dramatized) Review

I was expecting to hear a standard reading, but this was more like a narrated radio drama! It was well worth the money!
Very entertaining backstory for the band in the Star Wars cantina. The story is augmented by music from John Williams and original music for the band! I read it on the book "Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina" and while good, this was much more informative!
Buy it and enjoy!

Script Facsimile: Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace Review

Script Facsimile: Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace

Why buy this version of the Episode I screenplay? Far from a facsimile, this is an edited version of the shooting script, modified to fit the action exactly. I DON'T recommend it. If you want a copy of the script, I recommend the Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace Illustrated Screenplay, which has storyboards of all the action and is the original shooting script, with scenes not appearing in the finished version. Only buy this if you want a version that fits the movie exactly.

"Star Wars" Chronicles Review

Star Wars Chronicles
Average Reviews:

I've had this book for years and love flipping through it and looking at the production photos. It seems to have a closeup photo of every single thing from the original trilogy (sorry, no prequels). I remember for years (before the internet) it had the only good pictures of a Mon Calmari cruiser. The text identifies everything and provides useful descriptions, but don't expect anything too detailed or insightful. Overall, definitely a worthwhile investment for any fan of the original trilogy.

I am a Star Wars fan, like most everyone else in my generation. If you are like me, having lived and breathed Star Wars at one time or another during your life, you really owe it to yourself to listen to the Star Wars Radio Drama casettes, available from Amazon. Here is the casette versions, although I found a boxed set of CDs from Amazon that really kicked, but you have to search the Amazon database forever to find it. These audio versions are terrific, offering tons of material not in the movies, background on all characters, great acting by Anthony Danielt and Mark Hamil, great audio and sound effects, and much more. Recommended to all Gen X'ers.

Star Wars Vintage Action Figures Review

Star Wars Vintage Action Figures
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is *the* book for anyone who's ever had an interest in the vintage Kenner Star Wars action figure line (from 1977-1985). Nostalgiac fans who may or may not collect will see all the items they loved as kids, while experienced collectors will get comprehensive coverage on many different aspects of the hobby.
Based on 10 years of research, the author has compiled detailed information not to be found elsewhere, with a special focus on US package variations, store displays & promotional items, and package and display-related prototype items. If you think you've seen it all, you simply haven't until you've seen this book. The author has used large, high quality photos of all the items, many of which have never been seen in any other format. In addition to coverage of the toys many knew and loved, the author provides images of rare and one-of-a-kind items from his own and other collections. You didn't know how many different versions of the rare and infamous unproduced rocket-firing Boba Fett figures there were until this book came out!
There have been other books covering parts of the same topic, but none with the quality and depth as this book. The $34.95 cover price is far less than one would expect to pay for a lengthy hard-cover book like this, especially considering the overall high quality. Unlike general Star Wars guides that used lots of small images, the author has used large, high quality, professionally produced images. The paper stock and hard cover are also heavier than any other book I've seen in this area. In my opinion, not only is this book a bargain at this price, many of the items seen in this book can't be seen *anywhere* since they are in various private collections. It's a super treat to be able to see them all here together in one place.

This is a wounderfull book for the hard core Star Wars fan. It gives technical maps of everything you would want a technical map on. The History And The HardwareHow exactly did the Empire come into being? Who are those strange beings who patronize the cantina at Mos Eisley Spaceport? And what exactly makes the Millennium Falcon one of the fastest ships in the galaxy? The saga that was born with the line "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away..." needs no introduction, but the intricacies of the epic tale go far beyond a simple phrase. It is a vast universe that provides the setting for Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi; strange creatures known as Jawas deal in used droids, while moisture farmers eke out a living on a harsh and arid desert planet. Rebel forces use whatever material they can muster, bringing it to bear against a vast and technologically advanced Empire that possesses weaponry capable of destroying an entire world in the space of a heartbeat. The Star Wars Technical Journal takes an in-depth look at the many and varied elements that comprise the rich Star Wars tapestry, including:-- The spacecraft, from TIE Series fighters to Star Destroyers-- The exotic locales, including Tatooine, Hoth, and Cloud City-- Histories of the Empire and the Rebel forces...and much, much more.Through comprehensive entries, extensive photographs, detailed schematics, rare production artwork, character designs, and six eight-page fold-out blueprints, the secrets of the species, the technologies, and the inner-workings of the Rebel and Imperial forces unfold.Through months of meticulous research, Texas author Shane Johnson reviewed hours of film and radio drama, hundreds of pages of technical material and media materials, roleplaying rules, production art, and everything else available covering the Star Wars canon. A talented technical illustrator as well, he also produced the schematics needed to properly cover the technical details that went into producing the adventure of a lifetime. His other credits include Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Journal and Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise.Based on Starlog magazine's Star Wars Technical Journals.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

As a long time Star wars expanded universe fan, I had greatly enjoyed the Empire Series when it had been around, though alas I hadn't been able to secure every issue. However, Dark Horse's brilliant Omnibus compilations is the god-send for us die hard fans who can't find every obscure copy. And being a deployed soldier, I appreciate being able to read as much as possible. I can't wait for Vol. 2. A great read and will definitely be in my collection of Star Wars Omnibus'.

Star Wars Omnibus: A Long Time Ago... Vol. 3 Review

Star Wars Omnibus: A Long Time Ago... Vol. 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
STAR WARS OMNIBUS: A LONG TIME AGO... VOLUME 3 collects issues 50 - 67 and Annual #2 of Marvel Comics' classic Star Wars title. At this point in the series, The Empire Strikes Back had wrapped up and Lucasfilm appeared to be taking a greater hand in the direction of the stories and art. At the time, I felt that the series wasn't as fun as it had been, and my recent reading of this volume confirmed that, but there was still some enjoyment to be had. Volume 3 starts off with the double-length "The Crimson Forever", one of my favorite stories of the series. That leads to Archie Goodwin's exit as regular writer and brings in David Michelinie and Walt Simonson as frequent co-writers, with Simonson also taking on art duties. While the covers are pure Simonson, the interiors don't resemble his standard style, and that's because the pages are inked by Tom Palmer. I suspect that Palmer was chosen in order to give the major characters more of a movie likeness, but his work unfortunately causes Simonson's normally dynamic pencils to lose something.
Other story stand-outs include an Imperial conspiracy to kill Darth Vader, the return of Lobot (yay!), and the first appearances of Plif the Hoojib and Shira Brie. An unfortunate addition to the series is issues 53 - 54, which actually recycles story and art from an unused John Carter of Mars story into a Princess Leia adventure. It has to be seen (but not enjoyed) to be believed.

Definetly a great purchase for a Star Wars fan of anykind.

Star Wars Character Encyclopedia Review

Star Wars Character Encyclopedia
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This delightful little book features just about all of the recognizable characters from all six "Star Wars" movies, including droids, creatures, and certain groups (like the Gamorrean Guards, Stormtroopers and X-Wing Pilots, for example). Even characters who I recognized but didn't even know the name of are featured.
Of course a few appear more than once, where their identity changed (Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, etc.). About the only omission are the individual Podracers, who (aside from the dastardly Sebulba) are all featured on one page. And some entries are on pages with a black, rather than white, background (and not necessarily signifying evil vs. good), which makes them a bit harder to read.
No matter; this is an indispensable reference to "Star Wars" fans, young and old. But it only applies to the six movies of the saga; characters from "Clone Wars" are featured in their own book, and characters from the "extended Universe" are not here, either. But if you want to know more about General Grievous, Sy Snootles or Zam Wesell, they're all in here!

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: New Battlefronts: The Visual Guide Review

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: New Battlefronts: The Visual Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"New Battlefronts: The Visual Guide" is a stunning addition to the pantheon of Star Wars literature. It is a visual companion to season two of the CGI imagined "Clone Wars." The book more or less chronologically follows the season. As with its season one predecessor, it starts and finishes with poetry set to iconoclastic imagery that plays off World War II style propaganda: "I remember a time . . . when Jedi were not . . . generals but peacekeepers." The book is a tour of the season's characters and situations. There's a spread on just about everybody including Senator Rush Clovis, Poggle the Lesser, the deserter Cut Lawquane, Dutchess Satine, Senator Bail Organa, the pirate Hondo Ohnaka and Aurra Sing. As with the show, the Mandalorian material is especially interesting. Each two page spread is a visually spectacular balance of on-screen summary combined with additional factoids. All in all, it is 128 oversized (11.2 x 11.2) pages of visual candy. For the padawan reader, "New Battlefronts" is a satisfying summary of the second season of Clone Wars.
