This is absolutely a must have for any Star Wars fan and especially for those who are Luke/Mara fans. It entails the two weddings of Mara and Luke in a very beautiful manner. The scene where Mara Jade is trying on the first set of wedding dresses made me laugh so hard I was nearly crying. The dressmaker's slogan was "Maximum is Minimal" meaning the less material the better. Hearing Mara bicker with Leia over this is extremely interesting because both woman are strong willed and beautiful. The quality of the book itself is exquisite - meaning it's on that nice heavy paper and the inks are brilliant. Well worth the money.

Star Wars: Dark Empire II 2nd Edition Review

Star Wars: Dark Empire II 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

This second volume of the Dark Empire series is worse than the original. Far worse. And that's quite an accomplishment given how horrible the first one was.
The Emperor was killed in Return of the Jedi, revived and killed in Dark Empire, and returns yet again in Dark Empire II. As in previous incarnations, he's miraculously got another superweapon up his sleeve, this time a long-barreled ship that fires intelligently guided projectiles shaped like rifle ammunition, a weapon for which writer Tom Veitch could not come up with a better name that the Galaxy Gun. As the newly cloned Palpatine remarks, "Marvelous. It's a wonder we didn't think of it decades ago."
The Emperor also has a new elite force of Dark Jedi who bumble around and manage to get knocked off one by one. The Empire fires its Galaxy Gun and destroys the moon housing the Rebel Alliance - but not before everyone escapes. A new space-faring race is discovered, one that employs old but tested technology to power its ships - steam engines. Luke discovers ancient Jedi texts, along with a few lost Jedi, and begins the process of reorganizing the Jedi Knights. Leia has her third child, which she names after her father, Anakin. And once again there is a useless subplot involving Boba Fett.
But this time the ending is worse than you can possibly imagine. The Emperor escapes, leaving you with the sense of impending boredom in future volumes from Tom Veitch.

Dark Empire II Signed Limited (Star Wars (Dark Horse)) Review

Dark Empire II Signed Limited (Star Wars (Dark Horse))
Average Reviews:

To put in bluntly, this sequel has mostly the exact same plot as it's predecessor.
The Emperor returns from the dead, again...he has a superweapon, again...and he is out to blow people up...again.
In that sense, this book is actually something like the prototype sequel. It takes everything readers liked about the original, and provides us with more of it without bringing in anything really new.
Of course the writers did bother to invent some new ships, characters, weapons and sofort, but nothing that really adds to the story. It is just more of the same stuff we got from Dark Empire I.
In addition to this, one of the major drawbacks to this comic is the fact that a lot of the new things the artists DO come up with are kind of ridiculous. I mean, which Evil Emperor would give his new superweapon a name like "the Galaxy Gun"? And how come the Emperor can magically turn any random underling into a powerfull Dark Jedi all of a sudden? If he could do that, why did he bother with Luke in the last book?
If you were one of the people who enjoyed Dark Empire I, and you insist on reading more of the exact same thing, then you might want to buy this book. If you didn't like the original, you're certainly not going to like this one either.
The only other people who might wish to bother with this comic are the vivid Boba Fett-fans. Like all other villians from DE I, he returns in this one AND he has a lot more screentime than he did in the last book.

Dark Apprentice (Star Wars: The Jedi Academy Trilogy, Vol. 2) Review

Dark Apprentice (Star Wars: The Jedi Academy Trilogy, Vol. 2)
Average Reviews:

I can't say that I was particularly pleased with the first book in this trilogy, Jedi Search. However, this fact did not stop me frombeing even less pleased with the second entry into the series. Once again, we are treated to a lengthy series of escapades involving incompetant Imperials, grandoise superweapons and, of course, the omnipotent Jedi. Why did I read this series?
I'll start with the Imperials, more specifically Daala. Somehow, despite all the build up Anderson gave her, she manages to come off as little more than a cartoon villian, who dreams up wild plots, pats herself of the back for her supposed cleverness, and then fails miserably. If I wanted to see this type of character, I would turn on a children's cartoon! On a side note, the original idea behind Daala seems a little derivitive of Thrawn (character whose brilliance allows him/her to overcome a prejudiced environment). Sadly, unlike Thrawn, Daala is never able to live up to her reputation.
What the heck is up with the suncrusher? I could live with the Death Star (it was a very original idea the first time). Heck, I can tollerate a second Death Star. However, taking basically the same concept and going one better with it (we destroy stars now, instead of planets) pushes my limit. Especially when said weapon is invencible (it survives supernovas) and has the manueverability of a TIE fighter. Death Star? Who needs it? We can wipe out entire star systems with this little number. And, for good measure, its utterly indestructable. (Of course, we can't have such a weapon in Imperial hands. So, naturally, the rebels somehow get a hold of it. Go figure.)
Kyp. I rarely hate characters in Star Wars (why waste hatred on people who don't exist?), but Kyp annoyed me terribly. A brazen young hotshot whose limitless power in the force (conviently overlooked by the Empire) seems to me to be little more than a testiment to Anderson's ego, demonstarting that he can create a seemingly allmighty character.
Oh well. I shouldn't complain TOO much, since I honestly enjoy writing rants more than pleasent reviews (where's the fun in just saying nice things about a book?). Still, I can think of better ways to spend one's time, such as reading The Thrawn Trillogy, or The Hand of Thrawn. It is a free country, so I therefore conclude by saying that you are, as always, entitled to form your own opinions.

Dark Empire I (Star Wars) Review

Dark Empire I (Star Wars)

For everybody's information (this is from published interviews with Veitch), when George Lucas asked Tom Veitch to write Star Wars: Dark Empire, Veitch said he thought the Empire would try to keep the fear of Darth Vader alive by putting somebody else inside the costume. Lucas told Veitch, "You can't use Vader, but you can bring back the Emperor if you can figure out how to do it." Veitch proposed that the Emperor had been cloning himself for some time, and Lucas said "great!" ...People need to understand that during the Star Wars revival of the early 1990s Lucas personally ok'd everything, including the plots of the comics. Veitch invented the two-bladed lightsaber (TPM) and the Jedi Holocron, among other things, and these were approved by Mr. Lucas. Cheers.

Star Wars: Dark Empire Trilogy HC (Star Wars (Dark Horse)) Review

First - the hardcover trilogy edition: 10/10
I love the size and the convenience of having Dark Empire I-III in one complete volume. The binding is great and the colors pop off of the page. This is the definitive edition.
Second, the content: 9/10
I consider myself an avid explorer of the Expanded Universe - but mostly I read the novels. I have read relatively few Star Wars comics, and for some reason I have avoided Dark Empire because I've heard hardcore fans complaining about the resurrection of the Emperor, and the whole state of the galactic civil war in Dark Empire.
I would liken this to Splinter of the Mind's Eye (an early SW novel) - does it fit in 100% with the rest of the EU? No. Is it a helluva lot of fun? YES. Read Dark Empire - it's a different flavor of Star Wars. But in a fun, classic way. Han Solo is perfect, and we get to see a new side of Luke that is thought provoking and sets up an epic story if nothing else.
Read Dark Empire, and buy this edition.
