(More customer reviews)This is an entertaining story, though most of the themes are pretty easy to see coming. The plot is largely rather transparent.
I actually listened to the audiobook version, which is why I wanted to review this book. As I said, the story was entertaining. Laurie Klein's narration, on the other hand, was way beyond annoying. The "accents" she uses are arbitrary and often nearly impossible to understand. Many of her "characters" sound like they are talking through a mouthfull of food. My advice: read the book, don't listen to it.

Book Two in The Hidden ValleySpur Award and Levi Strauss Golden Saddleman Award-winning AuthorJeanne Williams is a master of the historical novel and nowhere more so than in this epic story of Kansas Territory near the border with Missouri. Jonathan Ware and his wife are deeply troubled that their sons have enlisted on opposing sides of the conflict. The Wares and the other homestead families are subject to raids by renegades from both sides. When Jonathan Ware and Bishop Jardine are killed, the women are left without protection. Earlier Christy Ware and her father had discovered a hidden valley, opening out from an underground river. Is it a possible haven for the women and will they be able to survive there?Jeanne Williams was born in Elkhart, Kansas. She published more than seventy stories while also producing thirteen novels set in the West for the young adult audience, including The Horsestalker which won both the Spur Award from Western Writers of America and the Levi Strauss Golden Saddleman Award.
