Empire Strikes Back, The (Star Wars (Econo-Clad Hardcover)) Review

Empire Strikes Back, The (Star Wars (Econo-Clad Hardcover))
Average Reviews:

Well, I'm just writing here because nobody else seems to have come here. Mainly because everybody that's read any Star Wars books at all has seen the original trilogy on video, so why bother with reading the story? Well, the books are always so much better than movies because you can tell what people are thinking without those echo-sounding voices or a narrator. I think this is, of course, a VERY good book. I love the way Han and Leia fall in love. That part where Han gets frozen in carbonite will have sort of sensitive people balling. See, even before the Star Wars fad, the movies were popular in our home. So, I am not a new Star Wars fan. (In other words, I like SW, and I know what I'm talking about.) Very good book.

Return of the Jedi Sketchbook Review

Return of the Jedi Sketchbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a simple book filled with sketches of beings, places and objects on Tatooine, Endor, The Death Star and a small section on Rebel Spacecraft. The cover is in full color but the sketches and text are black and white, holding true to what a sketchbook is. It shows the evolution of the designs and offers a little bit of text. The Contributors are Joe Johnston and Nilo Rodis-Jamero with extra material by Ralph McQuarrie and Norman Reynolds. This is for the collector and may not serve any purpose to the passing fan, especially since it is out of print. I have enjoyed this for years.

Star Wars Vintage Action Figures Review

Star Wars Vintage Action Figures
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is *the* book for anyone who's ever had an interest in the vintage Kenner Star Wars action figure line (from 1977-1985). Nostalgiac fans who may or may not collect will see all the items they loved as kids, while experienced collectors will get comprehensive coverage on many different aspects of the hobby.
Based on 10 years of research, the author has compiled detailed information not to be found elsewhere, with a special focus on US package variations, store displays & promotional items, and package and display-related prototype items. If you think you've seen it all, you simply haven't until you've seen this book. The author has used large, high quality photos of all the items, many of which have never been seen in any other format. In addition to coverage of the toys many knew and loved, the author provides images of rare and one-of-a-kind items from his own and other collections. You didn't know how many different versions of the rare and infamous unproduced rocket-firing Boba Fett figures there were until this book came out!
There have been other books covering parts of the same topic, but none with the quality and depth as this book. The $34.95 cover price is far less than one would expect to pay for a lengthy hard-cover book like this, especially considering the overall high quality. Unlike general Star Wars guides that used lots of small images, the author has used large, high quality, professionally produced images. The paper stock and hard cover are also heavier than any other book I've seen in this area. In my opinion, not only is this book a bargain at this price, many of the items seen in this book can't be seen *anywhere* since they are in various private collections. It's a super treat to be able to see them all here together in one place.

Just when we were enjoying the marvelous comic book of A NEW HOPE, the manga version, Toshiki Kudo strikes back with this spectacular version of the sequel of the trilogy created by George Lucas. The price is a little elevated, but the drawing is excellent. A must-buy book!

The Making of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (Star Wars (Del Rey)) Review

The Making of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (Star Wars (Del Rey))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As thrilling as the movies themselves, these accounts of making them add to any hardcore "Star Wars" fan's enjoyment. Mishaps, inside jokes, the pressure of deadlines, meticulous attention to detail, the intricate choreography of the space battles and duels, and how those fabulous special effects are done are almost as exciting as the finished product. The demands placed upon the actors, who must "interact" convincingly with characters and weaponry that isn't even there (added later by special effects artists and computer animators) is astounding. The reader gains a new appreciation for the genius of George Lucas and crew...as well as a hope that this won't REALLY be the last of this magnificent saga. I also recommend the excellent "Once Upon a Galaxy" which is the making of "The Empire Strikes Back."

This is it–the climax of the greatest science fiction movie epic of all time, and Star Wars fans can venture behind the scenes for all the fascinating details. From the first story discussions to the final stages of post production, The Making of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith is an exclusive, unprecedented look at the crafting of the most anticipated and perhaps the most important Star Wars film ever.Packed with hundreds of never-before-seen photos and interviews with the visual-effects teams, cast, and crew–including writer/director George Lucas and producer Rick McCallum–this outstanding volume offers a rare insider's look at the complete creative process. Granted unprecedented access to all those involved at every stage of the film, author and Lucasfilm senior editor J. W. Rinzler captures in riveting detail the intense drama and cliffhangers that occurred as production worked day and night for three years to bring their monumental undertaking to conclusion. Readers will uncover• details on how the art and animatics departments teamed up with ILM to create the spectacular opening sequence, perhaps the greatest Star Wars space battle ever produced • revelations on the genesis of archvillain General Grievous within the Episode III art department• accounts of how George Lucas and Rick McCallum reached critical decisions in often pressure-laden situations• exclusive interviews with Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor on how they prepared for their thrilling lightsaber duel as Anakin and Obi-Wan• An eyewitness account of the reappearance of Darth Vader on the set in Sydney, AustraliaFinally, there's the film editing–Lucas's favorite part of the moviemaking process. This portrait of the legendary director captures the down-to-the-wire tension encountered in getting to the final cut. Fueled by his imagination and his beginnings as a documentary filmmaker, Lucas makes films the way some painters create canvases, building layer upon layer in each frame of the film. And this book takes the reader along for the ride.

The Empire Strikes Back (Star Wars: Infinities) Review

The Empire Strikes Back (Star Wars: Infinities)
Average Reviews:

A wonderfully helpful stranger recommended this to me in a bookstore, and when I flipped through it and liked what I saw, I decided to purchase it.
The story is excellent -- I was very drawn to the "What if...?" aspect that permeates it. What if Luke had died from his injuries on Hoth? Who would then face Vader? What if Vader showed up at Cloud City a little bit later than he did in the film?
Instead of Luke training as a Jedi, we see Leia taking that role after Luke's death. And instead of Han being frozen in carbonite, a certain bounty hunter has to endure that -- and subsequently ends up as an interesting piece of furniture for Lando Calrissian's office.
This is my first experience with Star Wars comics, but it will definitely not be the last.

Imagines what would have happened had Luke Skywalker frozen to death on the planet Hoth, had Cloud City been destroyed by Darth Vader, and had Princess Leia trained to be a Jedi by Yoda in her brother's place.

Star Wars, Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (Junior Novelization) Review

Star Wars, Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (Junior Novelization)

I'm a mom of a Star Wars kid, and it's summer. I don't like him plunked in front of the TV all the time. But if he chooses to spend hours READING about his favorite action heroes, that is fine with me.
These junior novelization books are -- by far -- the biggest surprise of the summer for me. My son ordinarily chooses detective-type books, or science facts and experiment-type books. But he gobbled down these novels, re-reading them many times.
This book keeps the dialog from the movies in place, but gives a little more insight into what the characters are thinking and how they make decisions. There are lessons in the book, particularly self-control.
This is a great choice. (About 175 pages)

The Making of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Review

The Making of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Average Reviews:

This book is finally out after being postponed for a few times. It's actually 362 pages, slightly thicker than the previous book, The Making of Star Wars: The Definitive Story Behind the Original Film, which is already a massive book. It seems that no paperback edition is available yet at the launch.
Once again, I'm marveled by the amount of information packed into the book by author J.W. Rinzler. I can't even begin to imagine the amount of research and effort is needed to put everything together, after the movie was screened 30 years ago.
The book details the arduous journey in the making of the film from the first story conference up to screening, and to the film awards won after that. The writing is excellent, filled with all sorts of stories and quotes. You get to read about the technical aspect of creating the movie, the little tricks used to create something believable on screen - see how they use fiber optics for lighting spaceships, painting the backgrounds, fixing up Yoda, and much more including production diaries of how they shoot.
The pages are also loaded with concept art, sketches, storyboards, memos, film stills and photos. All well reproduced, very detailed. There are lots of fun stuff happening behind the scenes captured on camera.
While the book is pricey, yes, it's well worth the money. With so much material, it will take more than one sitting to go through them.
Definitely a "must have" for Star Wars fans.
-
Note that in the previous book, they took out some content from the paperback edition. Not sure if it's going to happen here again.
